Overview
A rare opportunity to acquire “rusty” - a truly one-of-a-kind 1965 vw split screen pickup that never fails to turn heads anywhere she goes.
Don’t be fooled by the bespoke, rust-loving patina paint job - she’s solid throughout and has been dry stored in a classic car facility since september 2016, and for much of her life prior to that. Originally from the USA, the chassis and underneath of the van are in excellent condition.
She makes a fantastic back-to-basics camper thanks to her custom, waterproof canvas cover and cavernous “treasure chest” storage beneath the original rear loadbed, but would also make a big impression as a delivery van, food truck or mobile bar with only minor modifications.
History
Acquired by the current owner in july 2016, she was taken on a tour of scotland where she performed impeccably - both on the roads, and on the campsites where she offers dry, comfortable, no-nonsense accommodation.
Following her tour of scotland she was given a full service as well as a fresh coat of paint on the chassis while she was up on the ramp. After sailing through her mot with only 4 minor advisories she was placed in dry storage for the winter.
The plan was to get her out again in summer 2017 but the birth of two children, work commitments overseas, and the pandemic meant that she hasn’t been out on the road again since, and now it’s time to let her show someone else a good time.
Exterior
Rusty gets a huge amount of attention and adoration wherever she goes thanks to her unique appearance - a combination of being a rare split screen pickup, her patina paint job, and custom canvas cover and frame.
Her stance can be easily adjusted thanks to the fully adjustable front beam, and she looks simply stunning when sat low to the ground on her replica porsche 356 wheels (with 165/ 45/ r15's on the front, and 185/ 65/ r15’s on the rear).
Cab Interior
The cab is a fun and comfortable space to be thanks to the one-off, custom beer label door cards, as well as all of the original, retained features. New rubber floor mats and insulating underlay keep dirt and road noise to a minimum.
Load Bed
The original rear loadbed is protected by a stained and varnished wooden deck. This provides a nice level surface for carrying loads or for setting up a double size airbed when used as a camper.
The 3 x dropsides allow for loads of all sizes to be accommodated and can be used in conjunction with the canvas cover to create an array of different setups depending on your needs. The framework for the canvas cover can be easily removed if you’d like to use her as a pure pickup.
Underbed Storage
Known as the treasure chest, the void beneath the load bed is a cavernous space that provides a huge amount of secure storage. The treasure chest bed is original and in fantastic condition.
Mechanics
she’s left hand drive and has a 1600 twin port vw air cooled engine with electronic ignition, and a refurbished gearbox which is a pleasure to move through.
She has a narrowed and fully adjustable front beam with new shock absorbers all round, which allows you to easily change the stance of the van whilst still having a good suspension ride. Similarly, the rear suspension is on adjustable plates to allow for easy adjustment of the ride height.
She’s been upgraded to 12v electrics and is running an alternator rather than a dynamo.
Her rear brake drums were replaced within the last 500 miles.
Show History
Neither the previous or current owner have taken this van to any VW shows so this is a great opportunity for a VW enthusiast to bring something new and unseen to the scene.
Further Info/ Images
Lots more photos are available showing Rusty in her entirety - if you’re interested in seeing them just get in touch and i’ll send them over to you. Similarly, i’m more than happy to answer any questions you might have.
Viewings
viewings are strongly recommended to appreciate the quality and condition of this unique vehicle, and are by appointment only. The vehicle is currently available to view in sheffield, south yorkshire.
The vehicle has now been removed from dry storage to accommodate viewings for this sale. She is being kept under cover and the engine can be run/ started but test drives will not be possible as she is declared as sorn, without a current mot, and the gearbox has seized after 6 years of inactivity.
Transport
The successful buyer will need to arrange their own transport to take her away.
