For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Lightweight in Drab Olive (1974).
TDi. MOT & Tax Exempt. Parabolic Springs. High Ratio Differentials. FFR Canvas. Pioneer Tools. Kenlowe Fan. 750 Tyres. 12v RHD. Heater with Demist.
Here we have for sale a lovely Land Rover® Lightweight, previously sold by us in 2015 to a local gentleman and now once again for sale with us. There is a very detailed history with this Lightweight, including user manual, cast off certificate, heritage motor museum certificate, and previous MOTs and receipts for work carried out. We personally drove this vehicle from the previous customers’ home to our premises, a journey of some 50 miles, and it performed without fault.
As can be seen from the exterior photos, this Lightweight has all the period features one might hope to see on a vehicle of this type….. pioneer tools, bringing plate, front and rear bumperettes, 750 tyres with bonnet mounted spare, split tailgate, vintage plates, FFR Canvas, military lifting eyes, correct military headlights with glass lenses denoting the early build date of 1974, etc. It looks just as it should, with a pleasing paint finish.
The interior houses two front deluxe seats with interia reel diagonal belts, and the centre box houses the battery for this 12v diesel conversion. The rear has two radio seats currently fitted, but a full set of bench seats with belts can be added if so required. The dash is pleasingly standard, with the correct heater, demist pipes and vents, hand throttle, IR lighting switch and convoy switch for headlights. Deluxe matting is fitted throughout. The military flyscreens still survive which is great to see.
The most interesting feature of this lightweight is the fact that, despite holding its own at a military festival, the vehicle is mechanically some way from standard – the beautifully smooth and quiet TDi engine is a joy to use and, alongside the longer ratio differentials and super smooth gearbox, this lightweight is a complete joy to drive. It has enough power to hustle modern traffic and even the potential to gain you points on your license in a national speed limit should you be so foolish to do so! The whole vehicle feels ‘just right’ and is a testament to the previous owners, who have serviced and MOT’d the vehicle periodically through the light use they have given it.
In summary, if you are looking for a Land Rover® Lightweight with that period authenticity and the ability to mile munch distances one would not normally recommend in a Series Land Rover®, then this is certainly worth serious consideration. With over 100bhp and projected fuel economy towards 40mpg – coupled with tax and MOT exemption, then this vehicle promises to provide low cost motoring with period, soft top, vintage charm….. it really does get the glances when out and about……. and the added parabolic springs make such a difference to the ride quality to a point where you just want to keep on driving!
