In 1982 the Scirocco II was introduced, just like the MK1 a design by Giugiaro (ItalDesign), which was already shown at the Turin Autoshow in 1976. There, the prototype still bore the name BMW Asso di Quadri, as it was built on the chassis of a BMW E21 320i-4. This model also used the Golf I base plate. More engine variants also became available with the new model.
At the end of the eighties, a sporty coupé of the Scirocco was used by Volkswagen, the Corrado. The Corrado was positioned higher due to its price and was not a direct successor to the Scirocco. In Germany, the Scirocco remained available until 1992.
