For sale is my 1995 Volvo 960 Estate 3. 0 Automatic.
Over the past couple of years, it’s been my everyday car and I’ve spent a small fortune getting it to its current condition. It has a long MoT, loads of service history, around 165, 700 miles, and plenty of fascinating stories.
It’s been a reliable companion for various adventures around the UK and Europe and has never been anything less than utterly dependable and a pleasure to drive.
It’s a fully-loaded car with all the usual 90s barge luxuries including electric heated leather seats, electric heated door mirrors, electric sunroof, air conditioning, cruise control, self-levelling suspension, CD autochanger, and an original Premium Audio System which sounds absolutely fantastic even by today’s standards.
In the last year or so I’ve spent around £2500 on it (I have all the receipts), treating it to lots of new parts and sorting common 960 issues. During my ownership, it has been looked after by my local specialist Trevor Burgess Volvo.
The biggest bill was for a replacement engine after the old one decided to go ‘bang’. The used replacement engine was sourced by Trevor Burgess and has around 86, 000 miles on it now. It runs faultlessly, doesn’t use any oil and, naturally, all the belts etc were changed.
Other new parts include:
- New PNP switch
- New crank position sensor
- New ABS sensor
- New Nivomat rear shock absorbers (self-levelling)
Various other small bits and pieces have been done, and I’ve just had the tracking done for the new owner. There are also a few spares included in the sale.
The car isn’t quite perfect, it has been in daily use for the last 27 years after all. The bodywork has plenty of bumps and scrapes although nothing too major.
Other things that will need doing at some point:
- There’s a small leak from the steering rack (another common 960 issue) but the power steering still works. It just needs the power steering fluid topping up every few thousand miles. Refurbished steering racks can be picked up for a couple of hundred quid.
- It’s missing a piece of rubber trim on the windscreen. These can be picked up from parts specialists like Skandix.
- Like just about every other 960, the leather is peeling on the front door cards. I have a replacement passenger side one included in the sale. I’ve noticed there’s a full replacement set on ebay at the moment in the right colour.
- There is currently some red lens tape hiding a crack on one of the rear lights
Overall though it’s a totally solid, reliable, useable classic that would benefit from a few cosmetic improvements. It’s a truly wonderful way to travel, and can easily keep up with modern traffic (especially when the gearbox is in its ‘Sport’ setting).
The 960 is a 90s icon and represents the last big-engined and rear-wheel drive Volvo. As such, values have been rising dramatically in recent years and look set to continue to do so.
