Charming 50s motoring, my Austin A50 Cambridge is for sale to make way for a different classic that has come my way.

Presented in very good grey paintwork, the car shows well and looks very smart. It attracts lots of attention at shows and out on the road, including the obligatory ‘my dad had one of those’ comments.

The interior is largely original and is in pretty good condition. It has had new wool carpets in dark blue, along with new underlay. It has a heater, the blower works, and all lights are working correctly.

The 1500cc engine starts easily and runs very well, idling perfectly. It runs at the correct temperature (and the temperature gauge works thanks to my fitting a new period-correct coolant temperature sender unit that had to be sourced from the USA at considerable cost!).

The car has, at sometime in the past, been converted to floor gearchange, so no issues with column-change linkages.

I wasn’t planning to sell this car, so have just had quite a bit of work done at a local specialist. This means I got to see the car ‘on the ramp’ and can confirm that the underside is very solid with no obvious signs of rust. Pre-summer work just completed by local specialist:

Fresh engine oil and filter
New steering arms, both sides
New gearbox mounts
New exhaust straps and replaced clamps
New rear door seals
New lower coolant hose
Wheels removed and all brakes inspected and adjusted
Greasing points attended to

In addition to this, at the start of lockdown it had a new clutch master cylinder to fix a fluid leak, and a new battery a couple of month's ago.

It has been very reliable, giving me only one problem in the years of my ownership, which was the fuel pump membrane giving up whilst out on a drive. I replaced the pump with a brand new Burlen electric pump. since then, she's driven perfectly and starts first time even in the depths of winter.

Overall, it’s a very up-together little car that can be driven anywhere without fear of disaster.

If I was keeping it, my next job would have been to look into re-chroming the bumpers and bonnet air-scoop. It’s all there, and is okay at a few paces, but could be improved. I’ve left the leather seats pretty much as they are, as I prefer the car to look period, but you could certainly re-colour then to improve them if you wished.

As I said, I was planning to keep the car long term so it has been well maintained, regularly driven and lives in a nice dry garage. I’ve been offered something rather more exotic, but don’t have space for both, so sadly the little Austin is for sale. You are welcome to view the car at my home in Weston-super-Mare, and I can provide further photographs on request. I’ll record a video of it starting from cold, driving, braking etc, and will send this to any interested parties.

The car will come with a brand new MOT for peace of mind (booked for Monday). It will fly through, so no issues there.

Thanks for your interest.
