Beschreibung
First registered in March 1961 the car was finished in carnival red as it is today. It came with the rare factory aluminium hardtop with swept back rear window finished in black only available on S1 and S2 cars. There is a soft top which is stowed out of sight for open top motoring. The engine was upgraded to a 1725 cc with 5 bearing crankshaft. The later all synchromesh gearbox was also fitted. Later cars had the option of an angular looking steel top which is heavy and prone to rust or did not have a soft top as in the GT model. The series 2, 3 and 4 cars 1600 cc engine lacked the power of the 1725 cc and only had a 3 bearing crankshaft.
The series 2 (S2) alpine was much superior to the S1 and was made famous as James Bond drove one in the film Dr No.
The oddometer reads 62, 900 miles which is believed to be genuine and the 1725 engine fitted at around 59, 500 miles. The hard top is black and still retains its full bright work, I have only ever noted around 6 cars with this hardtop and non with all the brightwork.
The car received a full body restoration and resprayed in the original colour in the last ownership and still looks good today. Many new chrome parts have been fitted, rear bumper, all 4 overriders, hub caps and rim embellishers, door exterior handles, alpine and Sunbeam badges. New door, door aperture and boot rubber seals. The interior is original and very good with only the carpets having been replaced.
There is a history file of maintenance and MOT's going back to 2003 and an owner's handbook. The last MOT expired 02/ 11/ 2020 but of course the car is MOT and road tax exempt. The most recent new parts fitted in 2020 include new brake master cylinder, rear road springs and starter motor. The underside was rust treated and painted in bitumen paint and the door cavities waxoyled in late 2020. A stainless steel exhaust is fitted.
The personal plate of JAS 254 stays with the car as it is not transferable. The soft top is vinyl and looks quite new however it has shrunk at the rear quarters.
The wheels were refurbished and fitted with new tyres. In my ownership of two years I have covered almost 3, 000 trouble free miles. Despite the car not having an overdrive gearbox it is well tuned for economy and on a long run will do 100 miles on 3 gallons of fuel. Only selling as have a small classic car collection and it is quite normal for me to think about moving on to another classic after around two years. I wanted a car with the high fins and hardtop with the swept back window and also the 1725 cc engine. This one ticked those boxes and a rare car to find.
