Description

Do you want to a highly desirable prewar, eligible for most prestigious U. S. and European events? With successful racing history in Le Mans, SPA and the Mille Miglia, the Chrysler Model 72 sport is an impressive and rarely seen answer.

In 1928 Chrysler mechanically upgraded their cars with red head high compressive engine, entering four model 72 sports in the 24 hours of Le Mans. They impressively came in 3rd and 4th, with only the mighty Bentley 4. 5 liter and Stutz Blackhawk beating them.

The same year, they also entered the Mille Miglia, and placed a very respectable 22nd and 25th, of the 83 cars that started the race. Four Model 72 sports also competed successfully in the Spanish Grand Prix / SPA 24-hour race of endurance! It is important to note, that this Model 72 sport is accompanied by its current FIVA passport (The Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens). This allows this particular car to participate in modern European events such as the Mille Miglia and Le Mans Classic with ease.

Chrysler’s success was largely due to its “red head” inline six-cylinder, a high performance engine producing 85 horsepower. Impressively equipped with technological advances such as full pressure lubrication, an oil filtration system, and a four wheel hydraulic brake system.

This model 72 sport is done in a very tasteful color combination, having underwent a full restoration some years ago. The black body is highlighted by its distinctive burgundy piping, over light grey body panels. It was an AACA Junior National First prize-winner, and the Senior National First prize-winner in 1977. In 1982 it became an AACA Preservation National First prize winner, and has since been maintained to a very high standard. The roadster has continued to be displayed at various events, winning first in its class at the Boston Cup in 2016 as well as receiving the “Chrysler Imperial Award” at Misselwood Concours. Two years later, it received the “Speed and Style Award” at the prestigious Greenwich Concours d’ Elegance.

Fitted with parabeam headlamps, distinctive glass wind wings, its radiator shell is adorned by the “Mercury Wing” mascot! The hood louvers are correctly accented with pin stripes, and this roadster is fitted with lovely wire wheels. Beautiful wooden artillery wheels are included in the sale.

This example runs very well, with long term maintenance by a well respected firm. Fitted with twin Stromberg carburetors, new exhaust manifolds were recently fashioned and installed at great cost. The top end of the engine was rebuilt by a Chrysler specialist, and the steering box has been rebuilt. It starts easily, and red head engine propels the car down the road at a great rate. Even more impressive may be the fact that the factory gearing is well suited for high speed cruising. 50 mph is effortless, while even at speeds in excess of 60 mph the engine is comfortable. This is one of reasons these Model 72 Sports are so desirable for rally events. This Sport is eligible for the Le Mans Classic and Mille Miglia, which opens a multitude of doors for its next owner.

After driving this example, it is obvious why the Chrysler Model 72 sport became a significant automobile in racing history. They are truly, the hot rods of the roaring 1920s!
