I HAVE always liked Avengers. It began around the time the original Hillman Avenger was launched and I was in my mid-teens. I thought that for a family saloon, it had a certain panache and that it looked trendy. Well, it did at the time. To me, that is. I have remained an Avenger fan and have had several over the years as my own classic users. Likewise with this gem, I am using her at the moment while at the same time being cautious about adding too many miles to her history.
She has covered 41, 000 miles from new and there's plenty of lovely paperwork in the file to back this up. It comes with the original Vehicle Registration Document (197s style) and the owner at new still had the car 25 years later. From what I can ascertain from the history, no-one else has ever owned it since. It has covered a mere 1, 900 miles in the past 20 years.
Now, this is a 1600cc Super which I believe is equal to GL in spec. Yet it seems to have GLS trim and goodies all over the place. I particularly like the GLS 6-clock dashboard and centre console, while those super trendy 70s seats are something else! Yes, they are the seats and not covers. She is metallic grey with a black vinyl roof. Don't you just love the way the vinyl is continued onto the top of the boot lid where the chrome strip then separates it from the paintwork!
This is a totally original Avenger. By that I mean unrestored and never painted. Given the Zeibart rust proofing treatment at new (she still has the stickers in the window and you can see all the plastic plugs in the door checks etc), she is quite something for a 45-year-old vehicle. There are a few stone chips here and there which have been touched in with what was probably an original touch-in pen supplied with the car. Arches, wings and door bottoms are all excellent. Perhaps the worst bit is a small area on the scuttle just in front of the passenger's seat. Two little spots of rust there have had some attention too. Overall, however, this is an amazing survivor.
Meanwhile, apart from liking Avengers, I have always thoroughly enjoyed driving them. This 1600cc Super really does fly along. In fact its power and eagerness even surprised me. This is THE model to have. Great, smooth gear changing. No rattles, clunks or anything. On the road she feels like a new car. Sounds like I am rather fond of this car does it not? Well, the day I stop enjoying my classic cars will be the day I pack it all in!
My classic cars are motoring antiques. Please do not confuse them with your one-year-old Range Rover. This car, for example, is 45-years-old and so will have quirks and faults in there somewhere. These are not always apparent when buying and selling classics which is what I do. I do not restore them, nor do I pretend that they are concours cars. The majority of them go out as they came in, and I continue to enjoy finding more - a skill which is becoming increasingly difficult as many of you will be aware. They deserve to be taken on as "family pets" and cared for through thick and then. They don't make them any more and demand now out-strips supply.
