We are pleased to offer onto the market this stunning, UK supplied RHD, matching numbers Mercedes Benz 190SL onto the market. One of only 562 RHD examples built, this particular car is one we know very well having supplied it to its recent owner after carrying out almost £20, 000 of re-commissioning work. Demand for these cars has been tremendous in recent years and these iconic, timeless classics are not only beautiful in appearance, but incredibly practical and useable. This example was manufactured in August 1960 and having spent its early life in the United Kingdom the 190SL was shipped to the USA where it spent many years in the sun. During the early 1990’s the Mercedes Benz left California and returned to the UK where it was re-registered and MOT tested with a recorded mileage of 53527 miles.
Between 1991 and 1999 the Mercedes Benz covered 9000 miles and was sold requiring restoration work. The 190SL was purchased as gift from son to father and then put through the families Mercedes Benz approved Bodyshop Group for a careful, no expense spared bare metal body restoration. The car was kept in its original, period colour combination of Ivory with Red upholstery and an extensive record of the work accompanies the impressive history file. The 190SL stayed with the family for 19 years and covered around 3000 miles including the London to Brighton Classic Car Run in 2009.
The190SL then spent two years owned by a lady in Derbyshire who covered just a few hundred miles, the car arriving with us with a mileage of 65500 but requiring some light re-commissioning. Work included new upper and lower control arms, anti roll bar links, rear thrust arm bushes, new rear top shock absorbers, new front wheel cylinders, rear brake linings, cup seals, new stainless steel exhaust system, carburettor rebuild, new inlet manifold gaskets, new heater hoses, various coolant hoses, engine and gearbox mountings, rear axle rubbers and mounts, new boot lock and keys, new rocker cover gaskets, new gearbox sealing ring and full service including ignition items. The structurally excellent underside was wire brushed and professionally undersealed, and various cosmetic work was carried out to the upholstery.
After this program of detailed work, this beautifully presented Mercedes Benz is driving well, still retains many wonderful original features such as its steering wheel, clock and Solex carburettors and is now performing superbly on the road. Having had a no expense spared body restoration and build up with an approved Mercedes Benz Bodyshop, over 20 years on the car still presents superbly. The panels are superbly straight with impressive gaps, the underside is excellent, and the paint finish still gleams all these years on. Chrome work is lovely throughout, the interior has nicely aged and the hood is excellent having been replaced in the early 2000's. This is now a stunning example, its performance is impressive, oil pressure very good, the gearbox absolutely superb, as is the rear axle. 683 XVM is a rare home market car with good quality history and with limited numbers available, this should prove a very sought after motor car.
