Description
A good ridable and rare solid tyre safety bicycle manufactured by Singer. Believed to be the "ROYAL" model. Built at a time when the ordinary bicycle or 'Penny Farthing' was king, but was soon to be superseded by bicycles just like this and when manufacturers were playing with bicycle frame design before they reached the optimum in the standard diamond frame design of modern times. The chain on a bicycle was still in its infancy and hence the design of the chain on this particular machine being heavier in design.
The bicycle has 30" inch solid tyre rims with radial spokes. Plunger brake on the front tyre and fixed wheel for added 'Brave' braking. Nice cast foot rests on the front forks and a similar designed rear mounting step to help the rider climb aboard. The saddle is slightly later in manufacture, but is in fabulously original condition and made by 'GOUGH & Co' of Birmingham. The handles bars are wide and are fitted with later celluloid grips, with a nice delicate brake lever. The frame is quite distinctive with fine tubes and curves. A front mudguard it fitted and appears to be original, sadly the rear mudguard is missing, but the mounting holes are on the frame.
At some point during the bicycles life, the original cranks and pedals went missing, so the previous owner had the correct type of cranks and pedals machined to the original design at great expense.
The bicycle has a great presence, it's a very smooth ride and to own a bicycle this old; really does transport you back in time !
