The brainchild of Ghia designer Giorgetto Giugiaro the Maserati Ghibli first took our breath away in 1967. Describing his creation Giugiaro detailed the vision he was looking to achieve ‘A very striking, long, flat bonnet, a full width radiator grille and pop-up headlights, a sharply angled windscreen, wide squat sidelights that end in a vertical segment and very clean flanks even though the coachline did have lots of movement to it. The rear end was high for aerodynamic efficiency as well as functional reasons (the two fuel tanks lie behind the rear axle and have a very raised neck)’. The concept car was so well received at the Turin Show in November 66 that the first deliveries began the following spring: its beauty rivalling Ferrari’s Daytona with performance to match. Even so, this steel bodied Maserati weighed in at 1650kg with tanks full but registered 150 mph with ease, seeing 60mph in 7 seconds in its original 4. 7 litre form. Mated to a 5 speed ZF manual gearbox this Moderna assembled Super Tourer offered 330 bhp, a smooth V8 that majored on torque rather than high revs with 393NM on tap. A two-seater Ghibli (named after Sahara Desert winds) enhanced shape stretched out to 4. 5m in length / 1. 8m width and benefits from a low roof line courtesy of a dry sump motor allowing the block to sit low in the chassis. Cornering is precise with steering lightening nicely at speed’. Octane magazine used the phrase ‘Road Burner’ which it needed to be vying with Ferrari for the title ‘fastest car in the world’. The race proven 90 degree V8 of 4719cc, twin-cam with 16 valves, is fuelled by 4 (42 DCNF 9) twin choke Webers. Light alloy cylinder head and block which featured special cast liners with alloy pistons. Ian Fraser pointed out in Classic Car magazine ‘the word Maserati makes one think of mystique whilst the mechanical package combined with magnificent lines makes the underrated Ghibli the stuff of dreams.’
Registered to Citroen Cars (Maserati Division) in June 1972, Model code Tipo AM115 was one of only 13 right hand drive versions delivered to the UK and by December 11th a new owner was enjoying the V8 audio around the lanes of Cheshire. The immense history file confirms it went on to spend time in Kent, Salisbury, Cumbria and West London. A desirable specification that enjoyed both manual selection and power steering, finished in its original yellow hue this Ghibli shows just 34, 413 miles which we believe to be correct. History file offers invoices from 1999, at this time the mileage was recorded at 31, 551. In January 2020 Bill McGrath Maserati rebuilt the carbs, fitted new clutch master and slave cylinders and replaced front wheel bearings. A full engine rebuild totalling over £15k was also undertaken by Bill McGrath and completed in November 2001 @ 31, 614 miles. Whilst the gearbox enjoyed the same attention in March 2006. The current custodian took the reins August 2008 and requested a full inspection and report from McGrath in the November @ 32186 miles resulting in brake calipers being restored plus rear axle and propshaft overhauls the following April. Work continued throughout 09 and into 2010 where every aspect of this Maserati was considered including a refurb of the beautiful Campagnolo rims … a total of £22500. 00 outlay. Ferrari Specialists SMDG took charge over the next couple of years before the Ghibli came to Country Classic Cars December 2018 @ 33948 miles at which time a carb overhaul and full service were carried out; it has covered less than 500 miles since. Mot history/ certificates are available from 2003 whilst the current V5 shows just 4 previous keepers.
New leather seat covers and Alcantara dash top have very recently been fitted whilst samples of carpet have been supplied to a specialist to manufacture a complete set which Country Classic Cars will install prior to sale completion. Included in the sale are both parts and drivers’ manuals re-produced by the Maserati Club. There can be no denying the current owner has bestowed a ‘money no object’ philosophy with this Maserati and that translates into how this Super-GT now presents and drives. Once the interior improvements (carpets and valet) have been completed by ourselves, Country Classic cars will also carry out a full inspection and treat the paint to a machine polish prior to sale. On ramp inspections for this vehicle can be arranged but will need to be booked in advance as the Ghibli is kept in secure storage.
