The 550 Maranello marked Ferrari’s return to a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout for its 2-seater 12-cylinder model, 23 years after the Successful 365 GTB/ 4 Daytona.
Luca di Montezemolo the Chairman decreed that Ferrari’s new series-production flagship should be front-engined, bringing to an end a 23-year-long line of flat-12 mid-engined supercars that stretched from Berlinetta Boxer through Testarossa to F512M reasoning was that a front-engined super-GT would be more useable, more driveable than a mid-engined exotic, and he was right. So right that today’s 812 Superfast still follows the template set by the 550 Maranello more than 20 years ago.
This stunning example was first owned by Eric Clapton who loves his Ferraris and still uses them.
Our customer is only the 3rd owner and has owned her for 18 years always maintaining her at Ferrari main and specialist agents whilst protecting her in an air chamber whilst stored.
The last major service was in October 22 and the cambelts were also changed and the air-con system was reconditioned.
All tools, books, keys etc are with the car and there is an excellent history file which includes documents with Eric Clapton on.
On the road, this is a mighty car especially as she is 25 years old now and the V12 combined with a slick six-speed gated gearbox is a lovely combination to drive.
