Description
RESERVED Signal red with a white piped black interior, complemented by chrome wire wheels, isn’t this the classic combination we all have in mind when we dream about a sixties British roadster! The friendly MGB’s biggest contender, the TR4, was the second most succesful English sportscar available back then and it is easy to see why! Powered by a big 2138 cc 4 cylinder engine with bags of torque and clothed in a stunning Michelotti designed body, the TR4 had it all. There wasn’t a single thing this car lacked. Beautiful, fast, practical and reliable, it even had a roomy interior! OK, the suspension was a bit on the hard side but wasn’t this one of the things that made the TR so typical!
When the TR4 was replaced by the softer sprung independent rear suspension TR4A in ‘65, it was decided that a solid axle version would remain available in the US to push costs down and to keep the die hard fans satisfied. And, of course, the solid axle TR4A proved a big hit! Apart from the IRS suspension and modified chassis, retained by the solid axle TR4A, the A had some minor improvements over the TR4. Front side markers and a revised grill gave the car a facelifted look, the interior gained a wooden dash as standard and the hood was of the convertible type. All in all it was still a TR4 and for most people the difference is hard to spot.
Our 1966 TR is a solid axle specimen. Cherished and kept in a heated showroom for over 10 years by the last owner, it looks stunning in its red livery. It was imported many decades ago and has a good body on a solid chassis. The paintwork is in very nice condition and is a hommage to the care the last owner spent on his lovely TR. Complemented by excellent chrome and new chrome wire wheels, the overall impression is that it has been pampered and used on high days only.
The interior benefits from very well sitting seats which suit the car very well. The beautiful wooden dash and leather sports steering wheel are stunning and the rest of the interior is in excellent condition, as is the convertible top.
Mechanically, the torquey big four starts well and has good oil pressure when driving. The brakes work well and the driving experience is great! The TR benefits from a stainless steel exhaust.
