This lovely replica Jaguar SS100 by Suffolk Sports Cars was built by a retired engineer between 2016 and 2017. The detailed and extensive list of parts and directions are enclosed within the history file with invoices totalling some £79, 000 for parts alone. The level of detail of both the Suffolk parts plus the extra care taken by the builder has produced a truly superb quality car that fully evokes the original – albeit with rather more power!
The engine is a 4. 2 litre Jaguar XJ6 unit and was reconditioned by Ivor Searle Ltd and connected to a lightened flywheel. It has a stainless steel tubular exhaust manifold together with the rest of the system. Carburettors are reconditioned 2” SUs and electronic ignition is by a Powerspark distributor. Power output is likely to be over 230 bhp. The reconditioned four-speed gearbox has a rebuilt Laycock overdrive unit working on top gear.
The interior is in beige leather with matching cashmere carpets. All beautifully fitted and bound. The headlights are replica Lucas Q596s and matching replica ‘owls-eye’ rear lamps can be found to the rear. There is a tonneau cover, hood and side screens in black mohair plus a matching cover to conceal the folded hood. As well as the luggage rack, there is a small lockable rear compartment with a lift-out lid.
The whole build history was fully documented both in a book and with photos on DVD. It also comes with all old MoTs plus a new 12 month MoT test certificate, various build invoices, Suffolk build manual (with additional notes), an XJ6 manual and a large file of specifications. Unlike many Suffolk cars, this one is correctly registered.
The car has only covered around 3, 500 miles since built and presents in wonderful condition with its Jaguar Azure Blue paintwork – a colour which dates from the early seventies and is common on E Type roadsters.
It drives very well with relatively soft, well damped suspension that doesn’t crash the structure. It has a lovely mellow exhaust note that isn’t too tiring on a run but sounds authoritative and mature. A good gearchange (with overdrive on top) and nicely weighted steering. The Brockley tyres are in excellent condition and everything works as it should. A great alternative to a Morgan Plus 8 and very keenly priced!
