Here we have a very rare car indeed! This is a 1961 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe, Factory Right Hand Drive! Finished in Gunmetal and Black with a wonderful Red Interior. Our car has been restored and drives very well indeed. It is a South African car but is now UK Registered with all Taxes Paid and ready for the summer!
Recognised almost as readily as the immortal Beetle itself, and with a cult following all of its own, the Karmann-Ghia was, in its maker’s own words: "A Volkswagen for people who can’t stand the sight of a Volkswagen." Hand built by Karmann at its Osnabruck works, VW’s top-of-the-range coupe married a modified export Beetle floorpan, running gear and engine/ transmission package to stylish coachwork by Carrozzeria Ghia. Launched in 1955 in 1, 200cc form, the Karmann-Ghia kept abreast of mainstream Beetle developments, gaining all-synchromesh transmission and progressively larger and more-powerful engines. A cabriolet appeared in 1957, and in 1959 the car’s front end underwent a subtle re-style with raised headlamps and enlarged nose intakes. From 1967 the model was built with the 1, 500cc engine, gaining the 1, 600cc unit in 1970 and undergoing a front/ rear-end styling makeover at the same time.
Our car is a recent import from South Africa with very good bodywork, excellent factory shut-lines and only the smallest amount of rust, the (recent) South African paintwork in metallic silver with metallic black roof really shines. Red leather interior has nice patina and is in good condition with red carpets. Running the original drum brakes and a healthy twinport believed 1500cc engine with correct oil-bath air filter setup, (electrics converted to 12V) loads of mechanical and electrical work was done for the MOT in June last year. A full list of works carried out for MOT is on file. The SA 4-into-1 exhaust sounds more Porsche than VW, and the carb and timing need to be set up correctly. As a result of the MOT test in June 2021, everything essential works. The period radio is not connected.
Unfortunately there is no 30 year SA service history just many recent invoices. We do have all the SA registration papers and import docs and also the Certificate from VW showing a genuine RHD Coupe. Obviously lacks bumpers (but the inner bumper brackets are still in place) the car looks beautiful and runs and drives fine. We think the car needs a good service before daily use but it is all there and solid and 99% of the work has already been done. Please find another factory RHD early coupe in this price bracket and then tell me its as beautiful as this!
