Sometimes referred to as the “most beautiful Volkswagen ever,” the Karmann Ghia’s body is a triumph of the automotive stylist’s art, because underneath its sexy curves is nothing more exotic than a widened floor-pan and running gear from the humble Beetle.
By the mid-1950s, the German economy was recovering. Mercedes-Benz developed the 300SL Gullwing, and Porsche had a hit in America with the 356 Speedster. Volkswagen looked for a way to move upmarket.
The ‘Beetle in a sports coat’ – as it has been dubbed – was initially an unofficial Volkswagen. The idea for a sexier Beetle, and what would become Volkswagen’s second model line, came from long-time VW coachbuilder Wilhelm Karmann. In early 1953 he contracted Luigi Segre of Italian styling house Carrozzeria Ghia, to design a sporty body to fit the Beetle chassis. The original idea was for a convertible but Ghia drew a coupe.
The prototype was finished by October ’53 and shown to a delighted Karmann who then presented it to a, no doubt, surprised Volkswagen managing director Heinrich Nordhoff in a back room at the Paris Auto Salon. The normally conservative Nordhoff nevertheless gave it the green light and the Type 14 Karmann-Ghia went into production in 1955.
The Karmann Ghia is pretty enough to capture anyone’s attention — and its reliability and aftermarket support are only icing on a gorgeous, velvety cake. It’s a heavenly combination.
