Here we have for sale an ex-military 90, presented in Drab Olive with Black Steel Wheels on 750 tyres. This is a very high spec vehicle, which would be ideal for those who want the period ex-military look with more of the creature comforts one would want in a more usable example. It is showing just 105, 000 miles on the clock (this equates to 2915 miles a year), with a late military release in 1996, meaning it has had only 6 former keepers since then?. and this is likely why it has survived in such good order.
Externally, this 90 looks as though it has just come out of the forces ? our workshop manager, Steven Penman, is Ex-REME and used to work on these vehicles whilst in active service & he assures us it is very authentic to the brief ? with front lamp guards, military screw type lenses to change bulbs quickly, front towing hook, ATU boxes on the wings with whip aerials supplied to fit (as photo?d), larger door mirrors for better visibility behind, NATO hitch with rear bumperettes and the all-important pioneer tool set, which has become harder to procure with every passing year! It sits on a set of military style 750 tyres, which give that original look whilst also being slightly larger than the standard profile, which means longer gears and a more relaxed cruising experience when at speed. In our opinion, we think this 90 looks very striking ? as if it just came out of service ? and it turns many heads when out and around and gathers many smiles and waves too. Even the fuel cap locks as it should ? not a given on a 90 of this age.
Don?t think that ex-military means it feels rugged inside, though ? there is a pair of adjustable high back seats for extra comfort, with a central cubby box, which has been made out of an old ammunition tin! Rear Benches are fitted to give seating for six occupants including the driver ? sliding rear windows can be fitted on request for £995 to give a station wagon feel if so required. Once again, it is great to see lots of the original features remain ? including the sliding window door tops, which are very handy, the gun clips for an SA80, map light for the passenger & even sun-visors which are a welcome addition when driving in low-sun. The original central convoy switch is still fitted for the lights, which is great to see. Matting is fitted to the footwells to protect against dirt and damage.
Where these 90s really stand apart from the crowd though is out on the road ? having covered only 2915 miles a year since new, this feels well-sorted to drive? and compared to a Series or even an earlier 90 ? power steering is a revelation, which when partnered to a five speed gearbox, front disc brakes and coil sprung suspension ? it feels like a modern 90 to drive. This is an especially attractive prospect when one remembers this is before the days of OBD and ECU?s ? so they are simpler and cheaper to repair due to ?old style? mechanical engineering. Coupling this to the fact that in just 4 years time, this 90 will qualify for free road tax and MOT exemption, this becomes a really attractive prospect for those who want a fuss-free ownership experience but don?t want to stomach the leaf sprung, 4 speed, non-power steering Series! A kenlowe fan is fitted to keep things cool and increase power ? a recent water pump has also been fitted, which is a common item which requires replacement at this age ? so good to see it has been done.
In summary then, this 90 really does promise to be all things to all men ? and with the added bonus of classic insurance, with those military looks meaning it would be ideal to show, use off-road, on the road, or in just about any scenario ? that may even be true! It is very unusual for us to get a military spec 90 with basically all of the specification available ? so we don?t foresee this being around for long.
