BSA C15 (1960) – Matching Numbers/ Total Restoration
The C15 is a 250cc single-cylinder OHV motorcycle manufactured by BSA from September 1958 until 1967. It was the company’s first four-stroke/ unit-construction motorcycle. A road-going Sports derivative was added in 1961 and off-road Trials versions were also available in the range.
Producing 15 bhp (11 kW), the C15's lack of power meant that it was hard for the BSA to compete with the more sophisticated multi-cylinder, 2-stroke Japanese motorcycles which began arriving in the UK in the 1960s. Today good/ restored original specification C15’s makes an ideal starter classic.
I was delighted when this lovely C15 appeared on our Milestones radar – my first motorcycle as a 16-year-old was an identical machine – and riding her has been an absolute delight.
The bike was the subject of a full, photographic (180 images) restoration during 2017/ 18 at a cost in excess of £2, 000 for the parts alone. All mechanical components were overhauled/ replaced as required and the bike received paint in the original specification blue – she is a sharp looking old girl.
There is a nice history folder with a summary of work/ invoices, DVLA summary of previous owners and a memory card with a photographic history of the restoration.
On the road the C15 does not disappoint. She is not the quickest machine but the four-stroke, single cylinder engine sounds lovely, and it is a very easy machine to start/ ride and enjoy.
Ideal as a starter classic or simply a cheap/ quirky runabout we recommend viewing in order to fully appreciate the charms of this little beauty.
