Mercedes-Benz went head to head with BMW when it launched the compact 190 Series in December 1982, expanding its market to include motorists hitherto unable to afford the Stuttgart manufacturer's high-quality products. This policy proved an outstanding success, with sales of the 190 range totalling almost 1. 9 million over the course of its ten-year production life.

A sports model was not long in coming, the 185bhp 2. 3-16 joining the expanding 190 range in the autumn of 1983, to be followed by the even more powerful 2. 5-16 in 1988. These cars had been conceived with motor sport in mind and were quipped with 16-valve twin-cam cylinder heads developed in Britain by Cosworth Engineering, which based the design on that of its immensely successful DFV Formula 1 engine. Produced to meet the homologation requirements of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) touring car race series, limited edition Evolution and Evolution 2 versions had arrived by the decade's end. The last 190 E left the factory in May 1993.

This EVO II was sold new in Switzerland through Garage Chevalley in Geneva and first registered in December 1990. Number '309' of the 500 built, it has had only one owner, an enthusiast working in the Swiss watch industry, from new up to recently. His work involved travelling long distances, and he always preferred to use this Mercedes rather than trains or aeroplanes. Many kilometres were covered in the car's early life, mainly travelling between Geneva and Paris, and it was always meticulously maintained. Despite having covered 250, 000 kilometres early in its life, the Mercedes was in such

excellent condition that the owner decided to keep the car as he liked it so much. In more recent years it has been treated as a collector's car, only used for pleasurable excursions and no longer for lengthy business trips. We are advised that the car was always maintained by official Mercedes-Benz dealers and may be judged 'excellent' despite its high mileage. The owner has confirmed that no mechanical parts were upgraded or modified, it remains as it left the factory. It has been resprayed by Carrosserie de Plan-les-Ouates in Switzerland, although never involved in any accidents. The stringent demands of the Swiss Contrle Technique have ensured that the car has remained in excellent mechanical order and currently showing a mileage of 264, 000 kilometres from new. With this kind of pedigree, this EVO II can confidently be enjoyed as a driver's car - you don't have to worry about keeping the mileage low! - or added to a private collection as a collector's car. This sought-after model is generating significant interest in the USA as it is now over 30 years old and can be imported.

Accompanying documentation includes the old Swiss title and EU taxes paid document; current Luxemburg registration documents; original books including service book; and various invoices.
