Here we have for sale this 1979 Series 3 Land Rover®, presented in the original Deep Bronze Green colour scheme, with Limestone Wheels. It is becoming quite a rarity to see these vehicles in such unmolested condition at this age ? with only 3 former keepers from new, and two sets of keys for the whole vehicle!
Externally, the bodywork has been refurbished to a good standard in the recent past, with a spray-type finish, rather than the brushed paintwork that some have, which is great to see. There are lots of period features one would hope to see ? such as the vintage number plates, door mounted wing mirrors, original galvanised cappings and rear grab handles. There are some modern additions too, such as the free wheeling hubs to protect against diff wind up and improve fuel economy, along with a towball and electrics to allow towing. The spare has been mounted to the rear door, as per the photos, like later variants and defenders. This removes the issue of a heavy bonnet when trying to access the engine bay. All in all, we think this Series 3 looks just right ? of the period, but with some upgrades to make it more usable and versatile.
On the inside, the standard feel continues ? with three front deluxe seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. It is great to see both doors are fitted with door cards, which include both door pockets and door handle pulls, for that premium feel and to aid sound deadening in the cabin. The rear is unfitted as the photos show, except for a rear load mat and a rear door card. There are no frilly additions here ? just what we like to see. Rear benches can be fitted for £595 which would increase seating to seven including the driver, if so desired. Rear windows can also be fitted on request for the station wagon effect if required for £995.
Out on the road, this Series 3 gives a pleasing period driving experience, aided by parabolic springs for a more compliant ride? particularly nice if planning to off-road or drive the kids to school through the speed bumps! A reconditioned gearbox has been fitted, with slick changes and a nice ?tight? feeling when slotting into gear. The petrol engine drives just as it should, and thanks to a recent brake overhaul, it stops well too. Free wheeling hubs mean the best possible economy is achieved with the period set up.
In summary, if you are looking for a Series 3 which is true to the original brief, looks the part, benefits from MOT & Tax Exemption along with Classic Insurance and should prove to be a solid investment for the future, then this is well worth considering. It is becoming an evermore difficult task to find vehicles in such complete and original condition and spec, and we don?t expect this Series 3 to be in stock for long.
