The Z3 M roadster and coupe went down incredibly well with BMW?s enthusiastic M customer base, and it not hard to see why. Exotic looks and great performance from the original S50 engine found in the Z?s M3 stable mate made for a pretty compelling package, and the limited numbers made ensured interest would stay high, protecting residuals and a feeling of exclusivity.
Then came the last of the run, and ? whether because they?d run out of S50 engines or deemed it to be too out of date ? BMW in their infinite wisdom, gave us the S54 version of both the tin and rag top. Suddenly, the M coupe and Roadster took on a new meaning, and, with only 164 coupes and 64 roadsters being produced, a true Legends was born.
The Z3M Roadster ? or plain M Roadster, to give the car its proper name ? is a bit of a revelation. Where the S50 feels fun, if a little old school, the S54 feels deadly serious. ?Quick? became ?seriously rapid? ? the car feels properly fast even by today?s standards ? and with the driver sitting almost over the rear wheels, it feels light, intuitive, agile, and ? to use the technical term ? a right hoot to drive.
Some elements of the Zs felt a little ?previous generation? at the time ? mainly because they were ? the parts bin was definitely raided by the team that, after all, developed the car pretty well as a ?skunk works? project without even the initial authorization from the BMW board. Nowadays it matters less, as the car?s classic status and character shine through. But owners did often modify or upgrade various elements ? with decidedly mixed results. However, there?s nothing ?mixed? about this funky little Z. Tastefully done, and in effect only enhancing the cars cool looks and stand-out styling, this brilliant Roadster got off to a pretty good start, by being supplied from new in sports car classic Imola Red. Further post factory mods include ? AC Schnitzer steering wheel, gear knob, handbrake, pedal set, springs and roll hoops. The car benefits from an Eisenmann exhaust, H&R roll bars, braided brake hoses, a strut brace, as well a centre arm rest with cup holders. There is a hard top with the car (factory).
This M Roadster drives just as it looks ? tight, focused, fast and immediate. Not only does the car look fabulous ? all the modifications go very well together and the colour is arguably the very best for the rag top shape ? but it drives like a true sports car too. This M Roadster is not a compromise. It is spot on the money. The current owner is a genuine high level BMW enthusiast and a great customer and friend of Munich Legends. As with all his cars, this Z Roadster is a credit to his approach to ownership. Our technical team have carried out their usual detailed inspection, and are very pleased with the results.
