1974 Ducati 750 GT

Frame no. DM750S* 754927*
Engine no. 755024 DM750
? Landmark Ducati v-twin
? One owner from new
? Extensively improved and uprated

Designed by the legendary Fabio Taglioni, Ducati's first road-going v-twin - the 750 GT - arrived in 1971. Lacking the resources of larger Far Eastern rivals, Ducati had made the most of what it already possessed to create one of the all-time great post-war motorcycles. A 90-degree vee, the engine looked like two of the Bologna firm's bevel-drive overhead-cam singles on a common crankcase (which in essence it was) though the coil valve springs represented a departure from Ducati's traditional hairpins. The 90-degree layout made for exceptional smoothness and a lengthy wheelbase, a handicap more apparent than real that failed to stop the fine-handling Ducatis notching up a succession of wins in Formula 750 events, commencing with Paul Smart's famous victory at Imola in April 1972. Without question, it was Smart's Imola win that really put Ducati's new v-twin on the map.

This splendid Ducati 750 GT was supplied new to the current vendor by Johnson Yamaha of Manchester and first registered in the UK on 25th June 1975 as 'JVR 316N' to allow for shipment to the Isle of Man. It was registered on the IoM on 5th August 1975 as 'MAN 185F ' and then re-registered on 27th February 1979 as 'A750 MAN'.

This machine has benefited from numerous upgrades including the inlet gasket 'O'-ring conversion and 'bevel gazer' on the rear cylinder head (the original cover is included with the spares). The engine also has Lucas RITA electronic ignition and an uprated stator and rectifier. The plastic instrument console has been replaced with one from a Yamaha RD400, allowing the ignition switch to be moved from below the seat to the console. Lucas turn indicators are fitted and wired to the Yamaha turn indicator warning lights. Relays have been installed for headlight dip/ main and horn. The switch gear is Japanese, and there is also a British pattern headlight with Tommaselli headlight brackets. The following parts are all stainless steel: entire exhaust system; cam drive tubes; all engine bolts; and the front mudguard stays.

Turning to the cycle parts: the master cylinder has been replaced with a metal one from a Honda CB500T; a steel braided front brake line fitted; an extra-high centre stand installed; the wheels rebuilt with heavy-duty chrome spokes (originals painted silver); and new Continental Classic tyres fitted front and rear. The machine is offered with old/ current Isle of Man registration documents and the original 1975 purchase agreement. A quantity of rare spares is included in the sale (list available). Should the machine remain in the UK, the successful purchaser will need to make the necessary V55 DVLA application to reregister the machine.
