Description
Designed by Sergio Rinland the well respected designer, the GR02 was designed and built in only 4 months at the beginning of 1992.
Rinland was contracted by Gabriele Rumi, the owner of the Fondmetal insustrial group in Italy to design a new F1 car for 1992 following the disappointing performance of his first stand alone F1 car.
The GR02 was a simple and elegant design that incorporated the neat Cosworth HB engine. This enabled Rinland to incorporate a number of features that are now derigeur in F1 such as the 3D profile of the front wing, vortex generating front wing end plates to aid the performance of the floor and a blown rear diffuser.
This car was only raced by Eric van de Poele, who remains the only driver to have driven the car. His first appearance for the Fondmetal mteam was at the Hungarian GP, where this was also the fist appearance of this chassis. He qualified the car and impressive 12th fasest - out qualifying both Lotus cars, but unfortunatley spun into reitrement early in the race.
The following Belgian GP - van de Poele's home race was also to be the best result that the little Fondmetal team achieved - after qualifying 14th, van de Poele finished a valliant 10th overall.
The Italian GP of 1992 was to be the last race that the Fondmetal team raced, and ven de Poele and Gabriele Tarquini qualified 25th and 20th in the two cars, but unfortunatley both cars retired from the race before 2/ 3 distance.
Recently restored by MecAuto in Belgium, the car is ready to use and incorporates Motec engine management. it has recently been driven at events by van de Poele, this car is ready to use at F1 demo events and other premier motorign events around the world. The car includes a good selection of spare parts and the equipment necessary to run the car.
