1905 DELAUGÈRE ET CLAYETTE LANDAULET 24HP REGISTRATION No. AA 279 CHASSIS No. 303 MOTOR No. 202 AA 279 CHASSIS No. 303 MOTOR No. 202 A brand virtually unknown outside France, Delaugère et Clayette d'Orléans produced cars from 1901 to 1926. Initially, the company built single-cylinder tricycles, quadricycles and runabouts, but in 1903 it switched to larger cars built on the Panhard model. These more advanced models were powered by two- or four-cylinder engines with automatic intake valves and lateral chain drive; the largest model was a 24-horsepower car. Four models of 10/ 12, 12/ 15, 16/ 22 and 24/ 32 bhp were offered in 1905; the three largest had four-cylinder engines with mechanically controlled inlet and exhaust valves. This Landaulet by Delaugère and Clayette was fitted with a four-cylinder engine measuring 120x150 mm bore/ stroke (6, 789 cm3 displacement) and developing 24 bhp. The vehicle was provisionally (in 1974) dated 1904 by the Veteran Car Club and competed in various Brighton VCC races with provisional passports. The vehicle registration/ dating card attached to the VCC refers to the unusual valve arrangement of this car, stating that the presence of supercharger inlets "would seem to suggest that it has been modified from the original automatic intake system". It should be noted that this car has not been officially dated and we believe that it may date from 1905 rather than 1904. The car bears a plate reading '1905 Delaugère', which would have been affixed when the factory switched from low voltage ignition to magnetic ignition. Other notable features of this very handsome and well-built car include the luxuriously appointed interior, ivory door handles, Brennus horns, Pelgrims opera lamps, Howes & Burley self-generating lamps, Dubrulle six-drop oiler and AA badge on the radiator. Imported into the UK in 1973, 'AA 279' was restored a few years ago after a long period of ownership of almost 15 years. The car is being sold with a Science Museum certificate, various Delaugère documents, several restoration invoices and the Swansea V5 registration document. Under the guidance of the current owner, the car has travelled as far as France and has proved to be entirely reliable. It starts easily even after long stops and, given its large engine, moves very well despite a fairly heavy body. The bodywork is original and was built by Verheyden de Coubevoie in Paris. The car is fitted with an electric starter, making it very easy to use. The front seats are covered in beige leather with buttons. The rear seats are in traditional Bedford rope. As this is a buggy, the rear roof opens after unlocking two latches. This is an imposing car with a great presence on the road. It has a pleasant patina that gives it a vintage look.
