1927 Lea Francis ‘M’ type 12/ 40 4 seat Sports Tourer

 
Another famous Coventry manufacturer with its origins in the cycle industry, Lea Francis was founded in 1895. Car production commenced in 1903 with motorcycles being manufactured from 1911. Originally the cars were built under licence for Singer but by 1919 they were to produce their own cars using proprietary components. 
 
Midway through the 1920’s the sporting character of the marque was gaining strength with models such as the ‘Ace of Spades’ and ‘Hyper’ proving excellent and highly capable. The Hyper was the first supercharged British production car.
 
We are delighted to offer this 1927 12/ 40 ‘M’ Type which is a particularly smart example of the marque and has had much care and attention lavished upon it.

The ‘M’ Type was powered by the highly regarded Meadows 4ED engine, which featured a separate aluminium crankcase, pressure fed crankshaft and lighter aluminium conrods. A re-profiled camshaft and larger ports in the cylinder head made for a free revving engine with particularly good performance for its size.
 
Other improvements included modifications to the chassis, with stiffer rear cross members and revised rear spring mountings and four-wheel brakes were now standardised.
 
We understand that by the early ‘30’s this car was in Belfast and then moved some years later to Buckinghamshire. During the late 1980’s another change of ownership saw the car undergo an extensive restoration and mechanical overhaul. 
 
During a later ownership, continued care and maintenance shows further work to keep the car up to a very good standard.
 
The weather equipment is in good order, with well-fitting side screens and tonneau cover.
 
Included in the file of documentation is a VSCC Buff Form, a number of invoices and technical information, along with various images of the rebuild in progress.
