Thought to be one of just a handful of examples in Australia, this V12-powered 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Coupe is a rare car anywhere.
Emanating from a diverse collection of classic cars in South Australia, this Lincoln came into the now-deceased owner’s possession in 2006 from the estate of WJ Francombe, and brought with it a police record!
Back in 1985, despite being securely garaged, the Lincoln was stolen and despite months of searching and its rarity, the Zephyr was not found until eight years later, 2000km away in Murwillumbah, in New South Wales. It was recovered and returned to its rightful owner.
Beautifully restored today, it presents in immaculate condition throughout.
Its Dark Blue paintwork on the controversial sloping back aero bodywork glistens in the sun, all its chrome work is present and in great shape, and it sits on a set of original steel wheels with hubcaps and wide whitewalls.
Inside, the three-seater coupe retains its original tan leather trim – only 37 were produced with that colour and material combination by the Detroit (USA) factory – with matching carpets and the Art Deco influenced dashboard, with its distinctive arched two-spoke steering wheel.
Everywhere you look this 1940 Lincoln is beautifully detailed and presented.
The generous boot is trimmed in original two-deck style, with the spare occupying the lower section, and there’s additional luggage space too, in the rear section behind the front seats.
Curiously, this Zephyr also bears a firewall-mounted brass plaque from ‘T. J. Richards & Sons Ltd’ of Adelaide, suggesting some earlier work on the Lincoln.
This is a superb example of incredibly rare and interesting car, and one thing is certain … you’re unlikely to pull up beside another 1940 Lincoln Zephyr V12 Coupe at the next car event!
