Description
Dubbed as the modern-day Daytona, the Ferrari 550 Maranello was first unveiled at the Nürburgring way back in 1996, marking the end of a more than two-decade-old lineage of flat-12 mid-engined cars. At the time, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo felt that the prancing horse needed to be a little more liveable and driveable, especially compared to the often twitchy and high-octane thrill ride of a mid-mounted Ferrari.
The Ferrari 550 Maranello was given a 5. 5 litre V12 (485hp) under the bonnet coupled to a manual 6-speed gearbox it was intended to be a ‘softer’ kind of GT taking the place of the F512M . Even though soft , various (private) teams used the 550 Maranello for GT and endurance racing ( FIA GT , the 24-hour LeMAns ) and Prodrive also developed these cars.
A total of 3, 000 were taken into production with only 457 right-hand drive examples coming to the UK.
