Description

This is Pearl the Singer.
1968 Singer Vogue in good daily driver condition.
2 owners from new, I purchased her from the original owner.
She is very solid indeed with none of the usual rot you might find on 56 year old car.
The underside is in great condition as are the wheel arches and floors, pillars etc.
None of the paintwork has been restored so she has a wonderful old patina which I think suits her well.
There are a number of upgrades that have been carried out over the years, all of which make for a better daily driver.
The overdrive gear box, along with 14 inch (rather than 13 inch) wheels raise the gearing.
This gearing makes for a surprisingly relaxed drive for such an old car and I regularly sit at 65/ 70 mph on dual carriageways.
She burns no oil, does not smoke, but does have the odd drip when parked which is just her marking her territory.
I have no idea of the exact internal specification of the engine as I didn’t build the engine it is just as I bought it from a Rootes group enthusiast who had owned her from new.
The clutch and flywheel are definitely Holbay as I discovered when I changed the clutch along with the thrust bearing last year. She had a new clutch slave cylinder, along with engine and gearbox mounts at the same time just because it seemed a good idea.
I have done a lot of little jobs to improve daily driving including replacing the whole distributor, leads, and coil with an electronic ignition upgrade.
I have also fitted a new petrol tank as the old one was seeping slightly from the sender unit and I couldn’t get the new sender unit to seal well, so the whole tank was replaced. Parts are surprisingly easy to get.
I fitted inertia real seat belts as the original static ones drove me mad. Being honest I should have gone for higher quality inertia belts as these ones feel a bit cheap.
The carbs had a bit of an overhaul last year with new float valves and some E10 proof seals as they were dripping a little. I run her on E5 with an additive for valve wear which works well.
Obviously all the service items have been regularly taken care of with new oil, oil filter, air filters etc as and when required.
The underside has been given lots of treatment with Lanoguard and ACF50 to keep her as she is. I even use the Lanoguard on the general paintwork and chrome. Just a little applied on a cloth so the water beads in the rain.

There are a few bits to go with her that I have bought just in case, but never needed to fit.
There is manual or two and a file of history, and I managed to find an original jack to go in the boot.

There are faults and room for improvement so here goes.
Jumps out of third when you lift off the power until it is properly warmed up, but I have just learnt to live with it and hardly notice any more.
Some scratches (no chips) on the windscreen.
Reverse light switch needs shim adjusting as it is on in 3rd and 4th as well as reverse, so I disconnected it.
Overdrive works well, but the power feed is from the sidelight fuse so it only has overdrive if the lights are on. I drive with the sidelights on anyway so I have never got round to moving the wire.
Speedo under reads due to the higher gearing and larger wheels, but there is a GPS speedo in there as well for accuracy.
Suspension feels floaty, but I have nothing to compare it to, but certainly not like a modern car, it is comfy even on rough roads. It might be that I am so used to modern harsh suspension that I am being unfair here.
The paintwork is what it is, I think it looks great and I would never respray a car as original as this, but if that’s your thing this is a very solid start for a restoration.

This is my private car and not for sale as part of my motorcycle business.
I have projects that I need to get on with so regretfully it is time for Pearl to find a new home.
