Jaguar Cars - as William Lyons SS company had been re-named in 1945 - commenced post-war production with a range of essentially pre-war designs.

A considerable improvement on what had gone before, the MkV saloons cruciform-braced chassis featured torsion bar independent front suspension, designed pre-war by the companys Chief Engineer William Heynes, and all-round hydraulic brakes.

Jaguars existing Standard-based, six-cylinder, overhead-valve engine was continued in both 2. 5- and 3. 5-litre forms in the Jaguar Mark V, whose bodywork likewise maintained the pre-war tradition, though with minor up-dating in the form of faired-in headlamps, deeper bumpers, and rear wheel spats.

Like its immediate predecessor, the MkV was available in saloon or drophead coupe versions and featured the kind of luxuriously appointed interior that had become a Jaguar hallmark.

ABOUT THIS CAR

Everything about this car, the feel of it, the way it goes, the way it sounds and the way it looks has distinction.

Its engine is as docile in city streets as it is fast on the open road. The steering is light, positive, self-centring and free from road shocks. It corners like a racing car yet the springing with extra long torsion bars for the independent front suspension gives a delightfully smooth ride.

And what a find this car is - owned in the same family for the last 50 years with only another previous owner before that.

Last painted in the 70's, this car needs a full paint job. That's all it really needs cosmetically and asking price here reflects that.

The rest of the car is pretty good... body seems to be very clean underneath the paint.

Interior is good - the wood is nice... the leather upholstery is good... Carpets are good.

Soft top is good and looks like it has plenty of life left in it.

Good tires, battery etc.

Mechanically car seems and feels sound... engine feels strong.

Comes complete with Original Certificate of Registration, Personalised black plates "MK5", Factory Operating Manual and some spares.

Also comes with some historic maintenance records from Auto Restorations in Christchurch dating back to the 70's, which is quite cool to have.

A Heritage Certificate has been ordered for the Vehicle.

This vehicle has surface rust & flaking under seal on vehicle body underside from front to rear. In some places there are visible rust holes mainly both rear supports (requiring a rebuild) and various areas of floor on the RHS. The chassis is in sound condition with but has some jacking damage to the LHS rail. Price to repair will vary on the desired result and what is found once coatings are removed. There has been previous repairs carried out (as pictured) some appear to be in sound condition and some minor ones need some work. There is surface rust present on exterior of vehicle body by the rear of RHS step as pictured. For a vehicle of this age we believe the body and chassis are in great condition but under body is requiring some work. A restored example of these models would set you back around NZD125K... more if you had to import one in from overseas. Plus, unless you've seen the car stripped down, or have photographic evidence of its restoration, well, you couldn't possibly know whats looming underneath the paint either, and then one has to get the car complied, which can be a nightmare in itself if you don't know what you're doing. So in many ways, this car presents a great proposition for someone wanting a well loved and maintained NZ New, low ownership, low mileage drophead example, that one can turn into something really special, or just use as is.

Waimak Classic Cars would be happy to undertake any level of restoration for this car, at Buyer's cost. As an indication, NZD15K would see all the rust repairs shown in photos and a full paint job done, and this would turn it into a stunning example - still cheaper than buying one that is already nicely painted without knowing exactly what's hiding under the paint. With Waimak handling the process, you will get the job done without breaking the bank, and you’ll get a very beautifully presented car in return.

A truly elegant car. In its heyday, this was a car that expressed the British way of doing things.

It had an extraordinary ability to cover long distances at high speeds without tiring driver and passengers. Seventy miles an hour without stress or effort was something back in the day - even today it is a tonic traveling around in it.

This is a desirable classic car - rare too, as not many are still left in New Zealand. Its also quite nice to find one in this condition because you can see exactly what it needs, whats under the paint etc.

Car will be sold WOF’d and Registered if sold in New Zealand.
