Description

For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover Lightweight in Drab Olive (1979 – released from forces into civilian hands in 1997).

Petrol 2286cc with Weber carb. 12 volt, right hand drive, soft top (the one everyone wants!). Only covered 11, 000 miles outside the care of the forces. Twin tanks with working changeover tap.

Here we have for sale, a lovely lightweight, having served in the forces in Northern Ireland, and subsequently released to that area – hence the interesting registration number, which does not require changing. As can be seen from the photos, it has survived well with lots of really lovely and increasingly rare items.

Externally, we are struggling to think of something this lightweight should have – it’s got wing top ATUs and huge whip aerials – very cool – the correct bumper with front and rear bumperettes, front and rear NATO hitches, military tyres on lovely rims, all ex military lighting, an amazing FFR canvas (worth a small fortune), the correct split tailgate with a full compliment of pioneer tools – try finding them now – highly sought after. There’s a working additional rear spot for winter illumination too. The body work is fairly original and has done really well – we really like this look, as it’s got just the correct amount of sheen and finish……just how they should look. It “stands” really well and looks very ready for use.

The interior is also a very original and well preserved place to be….. right from the proper army badging, to the flyscreens, military convoy light switch, rare heater vents and heater with tubes, battery box, seat belt bar and proper lightweight seats too. The rear has benches also, so its ready for the family!

Out on the road, the 2286cc petrol engine with Weber carb goes really well, and the original circa 83k miles really shows – the slightly larger wheels and tyres also give the effect of an overdrive without the whine! It’s now fairly unusual to see both fuel tanks still operational, but this one has them – showing those surviving features we rarely see now. There’s even a changeover switch so you can read the levels on each tank! Very smart!

In summary, if you are looking for a “good” lightweight with all the features one would hope to see, we think this is it. We have enjoyed preparing it without having to go mad due to the level of original preservation – and have elected to leave all the bells, whistles and toys with the car despite their rarity – this really is a great survivor from the day – further aided by some interesting paperwork showing the point of release from the forces and the fact that it covered a good distance whilst serving – it was very much used and maintained whilst it served, which is good to note. Obviously this vehicle is also MOT and tax exempt, and enjoys “double” insurance discount, being both classic and ex-military. Ideal for shows, events, or just rocking up to your local in military, cool style – it’s got the lot. And remember, it strips down very easily – the doors come off with no tools, and the screen will rest on the bonnet – the ultimate cool riding Land Rover!
