c. 1964 Ducati 250cc 'Mach 1' Special Racing Motorcycle
Registration no. not registered
Chassis no.
"In response to European demand for a high-performance five-speed 250 roadster, Ducati created the Mach 1... Available from the end of 1964 and into 1966, the Mach 1 has become one of the most desirable production Ducatis of any era." - Ian Fallon, Standard Catalog of Ducati Motorcycles.
Designed by the legendary Fabio Taglioni, Ducati's first overhead-camshaft single appeared in 1955. Desmodromic valve operation was a feature of the racing versions and would later be applied to the sportier roadsters. The basis of the Mach 1 was the contemporary Mark III, whose engine it shared. The Mach 1, though, was altogether more sporty in conception, boasting clip-on handlebars and the option of a racing-type solo seat. A new frame for 1965 and a front brake air scoop were the most significant changes made during the Mach 1's short production run.
This example is nicely presented in older restored condition. Notable features include an alloy fuel tank; clip-on handlebars; rear-set footrests; and a megaphone exhaust system. The machine is offered with a note ('swapped for a Triton') and a CRMC Machine Registration Certificate dating from 1987, listing a '/ 1' in the engine number. Its history is unknown. Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before returning to the road or racetrack and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Key not required.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams website for all pertinent auction information.
