Lot 209
1981 Triumph 744cc T140 Bonneville Royal Limited Edition
Registration no. MFV 970X
Frame no. T140ES HDA 30757
Engine no. T140ES HDA 30757
Continuing its tradition of honouring Royal anniversaries and events with special commemorative models, Triumph introduced the Bonneville Royal Limited Edition in 1981 to celebrate the wedding of The Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer in July of that year. Known as the 'Royal Wedding', the UK version of this new limited edition Bonneville was readily distinguishable from the standard Bonnie by virtue of its chromium-plated fuel tank, black-finished engine, alloy wheels and twin disc brakes. The 'Royal' was based on the electric start version of the Bonnie, which had been introduced in 1980, and was built in UK and export variants with different finishes, 125 being made for each market.
The example offered here is number 'LE U007K' of the series and was first owned by a Mr C. M. Summerbell. The current vendor acquired the Triumph in August 2015. A full service was carried out that same year, since when the machine has been dry stored. Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require re-commissioning to a greater or lesser extent before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. The current odometer reading is 10, 296 miles (at the time of catalogue/ photography). Accompanying documents include a current V5C Registration Certificate; MoT certificate (expired 2016); an owner's handbook; and Triumph's signed 'Personal certificate of ownership'. It should be noted that the V5C omits the frame and engine number prefixes.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
