GUNTHER WERKS
Porsche specialist Gunther Werks is a passion project spun off from CEO Peter Nam's primary business as a manufacturer of high-end wheels and aero kits for exotic cars. Mr. Nam and his friends shared a particular enthusiasm for Porsche's final air-cooled 911 series, the type 993, and like so many great projects, it all started by friends pondering 'what ifs.' In this case, what if Porsche still made the 993, and what would take to design the ultimate iteration of this beloved 911?
Numerous firms have used the 911 as a basis for tuning over the years, ranging from mild tweaks to complete re-engineering from the bodyshell up. Gunther Werks, which falls decidedly into the latter category, is founded on the concept of what if Porsche never stopped building the 993, and how modern materials and engineering could maximize its potential. With Mr. Nam's experience in composites and engineering, the company was ideally equipped to develop the car almost entirely in-house, which is what they did with their now widely renowned and eminently collectible 'Remastered' 993 series.
THE CAR OFFERED
Each 911 Remastered by Gunther Werks is built to order to the exacting wishes of their clients. This stunning Speedster, known as the Buenos Aires Commission, is an incredible representation of the craftsmanship and design being turned out by the firm. Taking its cues from the Speedsters in Porsche's back catalogue, this GW Speedster takes the classic 'bathtub' proportions and cranks up the style and substance. The signature cut down windscreen lack of side windows, are obvious nods to the past, while extensive use of carbon fiber and a bespoke integrated roll cage/ hoop design keep weight down and stiffness up. Gunther Werks claims the Speedster body is twice as stiff as a standard 993, and with no weight penalty, allowing for blistering performance and an unforgettable analogue, open-air experience.
'Buenos Aires' sports a sinister all-black livery, with dark bronze optional center-lock alloy wheels, black leather carbon-shelled sport seats, and extensive use of glossy carbon fiber in the cabin. Sitting low on its dramatically widened arches, it is indeed an aggressive and imposing machine. Exterior options on this car include Black Edition headlights and LED taillights to harmonize its muscular looks. The is also a carbon fiber front splitter, nickel-finish light alloy door handles, Heritage body side graphics, and a PPF package to help protect the superb finish.
Inside, optional leather floor mats and 5-piece carbon-fiber floor paneling tie the theme together nicely. Like every Gunther Werks car, the cabin is exquisitely detailed with a dizzying array of custom parts retaining the familiarity of the classic 911 dash but elevating it to a new level.
All this jewel-like build quality is matched by equally impressive underpinnings. The suspension is significantly reworked with in-house designed components. It sits on a widened front track with race-derived geometry and bespoke suspension arms, fully upgraded bushings, bespoke bracing, and high-end JRZ Pro adjustable coil overs, tuned to Gunther Werks' specifications. Practicality is not forgotten, thanks to a custom front axle lift system to help you back into the driveway at the end of a day of carving tarmac.
Last but certainly not least is the engine the beating heart of any Porsche. This Speedster packs a knockout of a flat six displacing 4. 0 liters and rated for at least 430 bhp. Each engine is built to spec by renowned specialists Rothsport Racing, and features billet cylinder barrels, billet crankshaft, Mahle pistons, forged connecting rods, coil-on-plug ignition, GT3-spec intake plenum, bespoke exhaust headers, and a MoTec engine management system tuned to Gunther Werks specs. It is backed by a Rothsport G50 6-speed manual transaxle, fitted with custom ratios and a limited slip differential. Between this masterpiece of an air-cooled flat-six and the stunning lightweight body, the Speedster is sure to thrill.
Like each Gunther Werks project, the Speedster was built in a strictly limited run, in this case, just 25 cars. All have been sold out at the factory, and no more will be built. The Buenos Aires Commission therefore presents an exceedingly rare opportunity to acquire one of these exceptional automobiles in essentially new condition, with single digit mileage shown at the time of cataloguing. A stunning machine in every respect, the Gunther Werks Speedster Buenos Aires Commission answers those 'what ifs' in a most spectacular fashion.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
