We are delighted to present for sale this 2006 Land Rover® Defender 90, finished in Stornoway Grey – as I am sure you’ve gathered from the headline spec above, this is a top specification “XS” model – meaning it had every available extra at the time of purchase – designed for those who wanted a Land Rover® without compromising on creature comforts! We are very fond of Td5 XS’s – our founder, John Brown Sr, had one in 2002 when they were a brand new concept, and ran it as a daily driver for many years – only changing it for a later TDCI 110 when he needed the extra space – something which he always regretted!
So, what makes a XS so special? Well – it only takes a look inside to see the differences – electric windows, heated seats, air conditioning (recently serviced), sun roof, leather seats front and rear, tinted windows, heated front and rear screens, ABS system – this has it all – even remote central locking with two working fobs and two sets of keys… many late 2013-15 Defenders don’t have this level of specification! This means you can drive along in Land Rover® cool, without compromising on those things you are perhaps used to in a modern car… very handy if you’ve become accustomed or you’d like your wife to drive it and she’s not a fan of rudimentary interiors.
Externally, the bodywork is finished in Stornoway Grey (an XS colour at the time) and as the photos show, it is in good shape throughout, with the spare tyre correctly housed on the back door as it should be, and even a new set XS bumper rubber are fitted in case you should fall foul of a bollard whilst parking. Of course, a tow bar with electrics is fitted as standard along with proper rear mud flaps with a correct “cut away” for the exhaust – with the Land Rover® logo. The only notable addition is the NAS (North America Spec) rear step – often fitted because they both look good and give an easier access than just the original drop down rear step. This Defender is fitted with General Grabber AT2 tyres, which are considered the tyre of choice for on and off road driving…. again, one can guess what our founder had fitted to his “back in the day”.
On the inside, there are few nicer 90s to be in – half leather trimmed seats are fitted as standard to the XS, with heated seats too – handy for winter mornings. Electric windows mean no need to wind them down when wanting to use the drive through. Sun Roof means one can enjoy the warmer weather when cruising along. Heated Front (& Rear) screens mean no waiting for de-mist – many people don’t even have this in their 2025 cars, and here, it was fitted a standard. A Cubby Box with cup holders is fitted, handy for stowing items and for a coffee cup or a McDonalds one. The rear houses a pair of four rear individual tip up seats, bringing seating for seven including the driver, all with seat belts as standard. Tinted windows were also an XS only item. Even the Steering Wheel – an XS only leather item. The ultimate height of luxury is the fact it has full remote central locking as standard with two fobs along with a factory fit alarm and an immobiliser to deter theft. When sat in here driving, going back to any lower spec Defender feels a chore. Whilst the above may not amaze you in a world of 2025 gadgetry – at the time this was radical and unheard of in a Land Rover® – such a high spec they made it until 2015 when the model ceased and were unable to add anything more.
What is it like to drive then – about as good as a pre-2015 Land Rover® Defender can be. Not only does it boast low mileage and an MOT without advisories – but it also has a full service history from new at Main Dealer and then well-known independents. The paperwork has the original 2006 leather-bound owners manual, guarantee and service booklet which is stamped up to date. Power Steering, Coil Springs, Five Speed Gearbox, Anti Lock Brakes – these are happy in the outside lane of a Dual Carriageway or a Motorway at the legal maximum with ease. Many have tuned the Td5 over the years and have seen real power gains – but we don’t really feel this is necessary, and they are capable and easy to drive when compared to earlier examples – they run around 120bhp as standard – and are capable of 180-190bhp if so desired with minimal modification. It is a joy to drive and to be frank, is a much superior engine for drivability than the TDCI which replaced it.
In summary then, if you are looking for a Land Rover® which fits the “Classic” brief, but you refuse to compromise on creature comforts, driving characteristics and usability – this 2006 XS is the only car you should be considering. Remember – you may find newer ones around BUT they won’t be an XS – and to retrofit all these items fitted as standard to another will be far, far more expensive than this one!
