Lot 79
1956 BSA 148cc Bantam D3
Registration no. 233 BHA (see text)
Frame no. CD3 6616 (see text)
Engine no. none visible
Many a now-mature motorcyclist's first two-wheeled experience will have been gained aboard a BSA Bantam, a model that was produced in various forms for over 20 years. The introduction of the first 172cc model - the D5 - for 1958 marked a number of important developments, the most important of which were a stronger big-end bearing and improved lubrication. A raised compression ratio and larger carburettor increased maximum power to 7. 4bhp and the top speed to 59mph.
This Bantam was purchased by the current vendor in 2023 from Bonhams' Autumn Stafford sale (Lot 270). Used sparingly but otherwise kept in dry storage, it was last run on 29th April 2025. It should be noted that the current V5C document; old V5C/ V5, records the frame number as 'BD3817203' which is believed to be the engine number however, the actual frame number is 'CD3 6616' as it appears on the machine and on the RF60 continuation logbook (issued 1956) pertaining to the Registration number '233 BHA'. Accordingly, prospective bidders must satisfy themselves to the status and validity of the Vehicle Registration Number prior to bidding. Accompanying documents include expired tax discs; photographs and expired MoT's.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
