Background:The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL is one of the most enduring and iconic models in the marque’s history. Produced from 1971 to 1989, it combined elegance, robustness and grand touring comfort in one package. In 1986, the model underwent a significant update, including a revised range of engines, improved suspension, and, crucially, the introduction of a galvanised body shell – greatly improving corrosion resistance. These later cars, often referred to as ‘facelift’ models, are among the most sought after, particularly in six-cylinder 300SL form which offered a balance of smooth power delivery and relative economy.
The Car:This 1987 R107 300SL is a sought-after facelift car, which – like all post-1986 examples – was built with a galvanised body. Extraordinarily, the car’s current custodian has cared for it for some 35 years, and it is now being offered for sale for the first time since 1990.
The current vendor has used the car as both a daily driver and continental tourer during his tenure, often taking it on long European trips, as the Swiss motorway vignette sticker in the screen attests.
In general, the car would best be described as well-used and honest. It is certainly no show winner, with patinated, cracked leather and fairly poor paintwork. The latter would likely be improved significantly with a mop and a serious polish. Being a later car, it isn’t affected by the rust issues typical of earlier models, and the body appears to be solid both externally and underneath. Pictures and videos of both can be seen below. All four tyres have plenty of life left and are from a quality brand. The MOT is long and runs until March next year.
The car also benefits from a later-model Alpine stereo and the all-important factory hard top.
Running-wise, the car drives well and has just completed a journey from its London home to our storage in Warwick without issue. It is supplied with its original handbook, two keys, and a nice file of invoices chronicling the car’s history.
