The 1949 Fiat is a typical example of how Italian coachbuilders envisioned the post-war future. In these economically critical times, Ghia designed a series of luxurious and modern-looking bodies based on standard models and called this series “Gioiello”. It was hoped that this would appeal to a financially well-off clientele. Based on the technically balanced Fiat 1100 E chassis, the “Gioiello” was presented at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 1949. To increase the value of the coupé, Ghia had previously asked engine specialist Abarth to give the small engine a little more power. Abarth therefore installed a special cylinder head and a sports carburetor.
The Fiat was immediately voted first in its class by the strict jury in contrast to the public who that year chose an Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Touring, later nicknamed “Villa D'Este”.
Struck by the charm of the Fiat 1100 GHIA Gioiello, the first owner, a certain Malpiero Ernesto, purchased the car directly on site, agreeing however to make the vehicle available to Ghia for its presentation at the Turin Motor Show in 1950.
The car for sale here is a model registered that very year and has been completely restored in terms of mechanics and bodywork by professionals in the sector using original materials. Currently one of the few existing and circulating cars.
Our little Fiat Gioiello ran the iconic Mille Miglia in June 2024 without any problems, proving to be very reliable and economical in consumption (FIA Fiche number 009482, race number 170).
