Description
An important move for Abarth arrives in 1966, with the SE04 project for the Fiat Abarth 1000 SP, where 1000 denotes the displacement in cubic centimetres and SP stands for Sport Prototype. The car boasted efficient yet simple solutions that made it manageable even for privateers, among whom it enjoyed considerable success. The 1000 Sport Prototype presented yet another evolution of the twin-cam Abarth engine built around the Fiat 600 block. The engine, mounted in a mid-rear position, developed 105 bhp at 8, 000 rpm. Considering the displacement was under a litre (982 cm3), it’s clear the engine exceeded 100 bhp per litre. This was a notably high figure for the era, given that the 1000 SP was designed to excel in both short climbs and the long, demanding endurance races. The lightweight chassis and the polyurethane and fibreglass body kept dry weight at 480 kg, enabling a top speed of over 220 km/ h. The 1000 SP quickly began to collect successes, taking part in the major endurance races as well.
Benefiting from numerous evolutions and transformations, the car continued to race for over a decade, delivering great satisfaction to private drivers who were prepared to wait a long time to receive their car ordered from Abarth. This example is in excellent and original condition: built in 1966, it raced with some private drivers until its purchase in 1984 by the last owner, who has preserved it to the present day.
The bodywork is in excellent condition, while the mechanics were completely restored in 1985 by the specialist "Falorni" of Castelfiorentino (FI). Since then, the car has been used rarely, as evidenced by the period tyres, but has undergone regular and diligent maintenance. This magnificent 1000 SP, still operational today, was equipped with the Colotti gearbox, a very popular choice among drivers of the era.
The car is ready for reunions, historic races and, above all, suitable for Le Mans Classic.
