Here at HQ, we know how fortunate we are to produce some of the best Classic Land Rovers available in the UK – most of them to original “stock” specifications in a range of standard colours. However, once in a while, we like to give the staff the choice to do a “One of One” Special Edition, which we can offer for sale alongside our usual stock offering – demonstrating both our technical and design prowess. That is exactly what this 1973 Series 3 Land Rover is – an opportunity for our hard-working staff to really let their hair down! These builds are done as a real team effort from all departments – from the workshop, to the parts, to the design teams.
So – to the externals. This 1973 Series 3 is finished in Land Rover XS 2025 Tasman Blue Metallic, with black galvanised cappings and accents, such as the headlight surrounds, the colour coded wing tops, vintage number plates, the brand new black canvas and these are offset further by an Eiger Grey Bumper & Modular wheels. We think it looks fantastic and frankly, we want to let the photos do the remainder of the work for us – but the discerning amongst you will notice more features the deeper you look – right down to the Eiger Grey grill, the bonnet mounted spare and the flared wheel arches.
On the inside – the biggest complaint we often get is “it isn’t very luxurious in here” and “it feels very sparse”. Often, we do give our customers a polite dressing down about what owning a Series Land Rover is like… and having a Series 3 is usually the highest luxury one can offer with front demist, auto return wipers, and a synchro gearbox….. but that isn’t the case here. Those of you who’ve had either an XS 90 or a much more modern vehicle will feel very much at home. Sit in the brand new deluxe trimmed high back seats, and pull your belt across and click in – no static belts to fight with, a proper inertia reel system, plug and play – just like a modern car. Head for the drive through – and not only do you have a cubby box to stow any items in, but also have a pair of cupholders to get a coffee, or a McDonalds – it may sound crazy, but you’d be amazed how useful this becomes. However – the best is yet to come – not only do you have deluxe matting with a full premium sound deadening kit for that plush feel, but also you’ve got a central touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Built into it! It also has full Bluetooth, AUX, and 12v charging alongside a USB charger – so no matter your phone, you can hook up. The touchscreen has been fitted with minimal, discreet and sympathetic modification so you can enjoy Spotify, Google Maps for directions, Waze, or answer your WhatsApp conversations – all behind the wheel of a Series – amazing. This means you no longer feel as though you are suffering in an old vehicle – window open, shades on, sides and back of the canvas rolled up, your favourite song on the radio… we promise there isn’t a better, cooler feeling on a warm Sunday heading out for a drive! A reconditioned gearbox means slick gear changes too. A lockable fuel cap equipped with padlock prevents and deters theft.
Many editions you see out there are all show, no go… not the case here. This Series 3 may be a period petrol – but that is the best part. Smooth acceleration, easy to maintain, more power over standard thanks to a Weber Carburettor and a Sports Air Filter, larger wheels and tyres for improved gearing and a more relaxed cruise – free wheeling hubs for better fuel economy and to limit prop shaft wear, a towbar for moving a trailer with accompanying electrics – it still the essence of Series motoring and you still get that feeling – but just much better, less restrictive, cheaper, quicker, etc. There are some companies that for twice the price of this ENTIRE car they’ll drop you JUST an engine into a Series which they claim can out-match it – and usually, that isn’t actually the case and due to the modifications involved to make it happen, it ends up not looking like a Series at all.
In summary then – you want a Series. That is why you are here, looking at our website – we’d hope so anyway! There is nothing wrong with something that stands out though – nothing wrong with something that is easier to live with, and more fun to enjoy too. Sure, purists may scoff at you – being different isn’t for everyone… but at HQ, we think that being different is what makes life exciting, brilliant and fun. We love this truck, and we hope you will too. You won’t see another pass you the same.. as we won’t make another like this!
