Description
This is one of the last E24s, built to the Highline specification which was offered on the model in its final years and was eye-wateringly expensive at the time. The main feature was the cabin trimmed in 27 square meters of Bavarian hide and adorning every surface from the dashboard to the roof lining.
This example had many thousands of pounds put in to it in the early 2020s to correct the rust issues which plague so many elderly E24s. New sills and fabricated wheel arches were fitted, whilst those troublesome front wings (inner and outer) were removed, had new metal put in to them where needed and then anti-rust treated before refitting. The body then had a windows-out respray in the original Royal Blue with a new pin-stripe to add a bit of extra panache!
The M30 engine had a full service as did the brakes. The steering box was overhauled and new tie-rods fitted, while the electric motors for the sunroof, windows and mirrors were rebuilt.
To drive the car proves that all of that work and expense has had the expected result: this 635 drives beautifully with the relaxed, long-legged nature that made the E24 famous. The automatic transmission shows none of the signs of wear and age that many examples do and the glorious big straight-six runs smoothly and pulls well right up to the upper reaches of the tachometer when asked. The brakes grab well bringing the car to an unflustered and predictable stop.
This E24 is not quite perfect – while all the Highline trim is present and correct there are a couple of marks on the dash and the leather on the seat bases could do with some nourishment. But it is nevertheless an outstanding survivor and will be sold with a new MOT ready to drive away and enjoy.
