The BMW Z3 Roadster (E36/ 7) was the first two‑door, mass‑produced roadster in the BMW portfolio since the BMW 503 and the Z1. It was manufactured and assembled exclusively in the newly built factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina/ USA. The Z3 Coupé (E36/ 8), available from August 1998, was also produced exclusively here, but it did not have “predecessors” like the Roadster. BMW wanted to make itself less dependent on exchange-rate fluctuations by building a new factory in the USA and to be more competitive in the U. S. market. The quality of the vehicles produced there matched that of the BMWs made in Germany. The Z3 Roadster and the Coupé were based on the platform of the BMW 3 Series Compact. In August 1998 the Z3 range was expanded with a true “shooting brake coupé” (a two‑seat “sports car wagon”), whose presentation took place for the first time at the IAA in 1997. These closed vehicles were only equipped with the 2. 8 L engines (later 3. 0 L) six‑cylinder units known from the Roadsters or as M Coupé with a 3. 2 L engine and 325 PS. The design of the Coupé was initially quite controversial, and the Shooting Brake Z3 Coupé was sometimes unfavourably referred to as a “sneaker.” Today, that once polarising design has, almost retroactively, established itself, and the Coupé has since risen to a very well aged, highly interesting collector’s item. Accordingly, prices are higher than for the Z3 Roadsters with the same motorisation. The BMW Z3 Coupé is sporty to drive and also practical, reliable, and inexpensive to purchase, maintain and care for. It has a loyal following and has now already become a sought‑after collector’s item as a Youngtimer. Prices for good and well‑maintained examples are rising continuously. The here offered BMW Z3 Coupe 3. 0 comes from the 2001 production year and was first registered for road use on 03/ 09/ 2001 in Berlin. It has benefited from all model‑year improvements. In total 771 Coupés with 3. 0 litre displacement, automatic transmission and left‑hand drive were produced for all markets outside North America, of which 19 in the rare Sterling‑Grey Metallic and 3 in the configuration presented here. The Coupe boot is spacious enough to holiday for two with luggage. It is accident‑free and in pristine condition. The mileage is 30, 400 km and verifiable. With its 231 PS 3. 0 L 6‑cylinder engine (M54) it still delivers very sporty performance by today’s standards and, aided by the fitted 5‑speed automatic transmission with Steptronic from ZF, the Coupé is easy to drive; top speed is 242 km/ h, 0–100 km/ h in 6. 3 s, and peak power is reached at 6, 500 rpm. The M54 normally aspirated engine runs silky smooth, revs turbine‑like, and has earned a reputation as a century motor. The BMW has always been meticulously maintained.
