"THE CAT IS BACK", Jaguar announces at the world premiere of the XK on 7 March 1996 in Geneva. It is a long-awaited sports car model that Jaguar presented there.
The successor to the long-built XJS is available with the new 4-litre AJ-V8 engine as a coupe or two-door cabriolet. For cost and time reasons, the new model is based on the old XJS platform, while the bodywork looks completely different. It is retro-styled and again nods to the E-Type of the 1960s. The XK8 thus appears more delicate than its predecessor, but also more dynamic. Another E-Type homage are the ventilation ducts on the bonnet. The interior is far less classical in design, nothing here recalls the XJS predecessor.
In 1998 the supercharged variant arrived, turning the XK8 into the XKR. In particular the XKR delivers potent performance (0–100 in about 5 seconds) with plenty of comfort and enough space for a comfortable four-person journey. 395 hp and 553 Nm of torque ensure confident power reserves in every situation. This is helped by the so-called CATS suspension, which with adaptive dampers can adjust to the road surface in milliseconds and thus provide the best contact with the road.
Already in its first year of production, the new XK sells over 14, 500 units and thus surpasses the best annual figure of its predecessor XJS.
