Here we have for sale a recently rebuilt, high specification Defender 90, finished in the Keswick Green colour scheme with Silver boost alloys, galvanised front bumper and sand canvas. The real USP of this particular vehicle is the culmination of parts creating the whole – not just the rebuild – but a host of additional extras which really set this apart from an “ordinary” galvanised chassis Defender…
Externally, the bodywork is finished in Keswick Green, and this Defender has benefitted from many brand new panels including rear quarter panels, wings, doors, headlight finishers, grill etc – as the photos show the paintwork is of a sprayed finish to a very good standard throughout. A full set of 5 boost alloys are fitted, with the spare being housed on a SwingAway wheel carrier on the rear tailgate – all five alloys are fitted with brand new Insa Turbo tyres, which are a cross climate on & off road tyre with side treads, giving the best possible road holding whilst maintaining off road capability should it be needed. Everywhere you look one can see the details – even down to the new number plates, new galvanised front bumper with new rubber end caps, new door mirrors, all new LED coloured lights all around (including fog, reverse and number plate light!) which include LED front headlights with “HALO” daytime running lights – everywhere you look – this truck delivers. A towbar and electrics is fitted to allow towing a trailer, should it be required. When writing these adverts, we are always keen to stick to the facts, avoid flowery language and “naming every car” as some outfits tend to do – but we must say, in our opinion, we think you’d struggle to find a more handsome looking 90 – with the silver, sand, black and Keswick green detailing – just lovely.
On the inside – great care has been taken to match the exterior in terms of the features and level of detail in the finish – there are a pair of deluxe front high back seats, which have been re-trimmed in OEM style with a seat belt bar providing “plug and play” inertia reel seat belts. There is a central cubby box for stowing items out of sight, and the added bonus of cupholders, which are very welcome at the drive through. The cubby box also houses a Pioneer Stereo System, along with speakers with the cubby box acting as a discreet “bass port” to improve sound quality. This also has bluetooth connectivity, and USB charging. Those eagle eyed viewers will see that central touch screen – not for show…. this is fully enabled with CarPlay and Android Auto, meaning this 90 is very much the “modern experience” whether you use Google Maps, Spotify, Apple Music, Waze – you can blast along with your tunes and navigation with native smartphone support. This revolutionises a vehicle like this taking an old, laboured, poor stereo without any sort of phone connectivity to a vehicle which is at the cutting edge of 2025 infotainment technology and doesn’t feel antiquated – simply hop in, pop your inertia belt on from over your shoulder like a modern car – hook your phone up by either cable or wireless (depending if you fancy a charge or not!) and away you go – just as you would in a modern Mercedes, BMW or Audi! It really makes a massive difference to usability day to day – if you’ve never had a Land Rover with this system – you can’t go back afterward. Deluxe door cards are fitted with deluxe carpeting and sound deadening throughout the front, with deluxe matting on top. Rear benches are fitted with a load mat to the floor, allowing the whole family to come along for the ride. There is a USB and a 12v socket so those who don’t use the touch screen can still charge their devices, which is handy too.
And of course, unlike many Defenders out there, this doesn’t just look the part at surface level – this Defender 90 has benefitted from a recent rebuild onto a galvanised chassis… warding away those corrosion concerns which plague many 90s which are over 30 years of age. Power Steering, fresh tyres, new fuel tank, new exhaust system renewed suspension and a brake service mean driving this 90 is a breeze. The 200TDI engine, which has received the relevant attention, has been fitted with a performance turbo for extra power… and you can feel this behind the wheel too. It is a joy to drive – phone hooked onto the touchscreen, kids in the back, canvas with side windows giving a light and airy cabin with easy blindspot checks – it is as good as these 90s get really. No matter whether you plan to go down to the pub, on the beach, through the woods, or even outside Harrods – this 90 will always look the part – even those LED Halo Daytime running lights just refresh and modernise a whole look over original design.
By this point, readers of this advert will get the picture – here at HQ, we really like this Land Rover Defender – but there is one more big USP to mention. Many will read this advert and wonder why they just wouldn’t buy a later XS TDCI or TD5 Defender 90 – even though the top specs don’t come with CarPlay as standard – and for us, there are two simple answers to that question….
The first is the fact that this Defender is all about mechanical engineering – There are no ECU’s or computers here. The entire engine, even the fuel pump, are mechanical – you’ll never be chasing a sensor fault, you’ll never be fighting with an ECU air flow sensor – etc etc. Those who’ve had a TDCI and TD5 Land Rover Defender will know exactly what we are talking about – and many garages who don’t have expensive scanners can’t work on them. No matter where you are in the world – no matter how far “into the sticks” you go – there is nothing on this Land Rover, even when considering the extras, the CarPlay, the LED’s, power steering, disc brakes, five speed gearbox – that cannot be fixed with a spanner and a hammer or even DIY maintained at home. No need to be a slave to the dealer – do it yourself, or with a mate, or with any old school garage you find – they’re that simple. The 200TDI has a reputation for being the best engine Land Rover ever fitted – we’ve seen them with verified mileages of above 300, 000 miles without any issues other than regular servicing – so at 127, 000 miles – it is barely run in.
The second is road tax (and latterly, MOT exemption). Almost all TD5 or TDCI 90s now fall into a road tax bracket of £760 per year due to the revisions (and increase of charges) of the road tax system to base vehicles post 2001 on the CO2 they produce . This Defender is on the earlier taxing system, and so road tax is half of that figure, and in less than 7 years, not only will it never cost you a penny in road tax again, but it will also not require an MOT – less fuss, less hassle, less cost – but still the creature comforts you are used to… exemption like this in a car you could drive every day if you wish is not only something which will increase the value of the car – but also make it easier to live with day to day too.
In summary then – if you are looking for a Defender 90 which can carry the whole family, sits on a galvanised chassis with new panels, the creature comforts you are used to – coil springs, synchro five speed gearbox, disc brakes, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, Seat Belt Bar – this has to be worth consideration. There are few Defenders which offer such versatility, alongside longevity against both corrosion and complicated electronics, whilst also “looking the business” and driving like this one does!
