The W06 series, which includes the “S,” “SS,” and “SSK,” was based on the “K” model, which was built until 1926.
Chief designer Ferdinand Porsche modified the frame to create a lower design and moved the engine 30 cm rearward, thereby achieving significantly improved weight distribution.
The supercharged engines also became more powerful thanks to an increase in displacement and compression.
The 7. 1-liter engine was ready for use in mid-1928. The racing car equipped with the new engine was given the designation “SS” – for Super Sport.
Its performance at the German Grand Prix, which took place on July 15, 1928, at the Nürburgring, was spectacular. With a triple victory in temperatures of up to 40 degrees in the shade, the “SS” model immediately demonstrated what it was capable of. Numerous other racing successes followed, even before the “SS” was added to the sales program in October.
Despite its racing capabilities, the “SS” was primarily intended as a gran turismo in the modern sense. This was underlined, albeit not from the outset, by the range of body styles on offer.
Initially, only the four-seater sports car was available in addition to the chassis, but at the end of 1929 a 4-seater special convertible was added to the range for RM 44, 000.
In September 1932, a two-seater special convertible was added to the range, which was also available as a roadster.
A total of 111 examples of the “SS” model were produced from November 1928 onwards, with the lion's share (101 units) being completed by the end of 1930.
Our car was ordered in September 1930 from British Mercedes-Benz Ltd. in London.
In the summer of 1931, our car was featured and extensively tested by the English car magazine “The Motor.” We have a copy of the article.
The 710 SS remained in England for several years; for example, there are racing photos from Silverstone from the 1940s.
The car was later sold to the USA, where it was part of Don Williams' legendary Blackhawk Collection for a long time.
In 1988, the current owner bought the car from Don Williams and brought it back to Germany.
In an extensive restoration, he had the car brought into first-class condition and changed the steering to the left side.
Since then, the car has been in continuous use and maintenance. It has been driven on long journeys, such as 2, 000 km through Morocco.
It is still registered and roadworthy today.
This is a very rare opportunity to purchase an original 710 SS with a documented history and in running condition.
