Range Rover 2-Door “Original”
1981 | 24, 200 miles
Finished in Sahara Dust with pleated herringbone-pattern brushed cloth and Perlino vinyl interior
Few vehicles have shaped the automotive landscape quite like the original two-door Range Rover. When it launched, it redefined what a 4x4 could be, blending genuine off-road ability with comfort, design and everyday usability in a way no vehicle had done before. Today, early two-door examples are among the most sought-after of all classic British utility vehicles.
This 1981 example captures everything that made the original Range Rover so special, while benefitting from a comprehensive, tastefully executed restoration that enhances usability without compromising character. Finished in Sahara Dust, it presents beautifully, the colour perfectly suiting the clean, architectural lines of the early two-door body.
Under the bonnet sits a 3. 9-litre V8, paired with an R380 five-speed manual gearbox, bringing a noticeable improvement in drivability and cruising ability while retaining the unmistakable soundtrack and feel that define the classic Range Rover experience.
The restoration was carried out with a clear emphasis on longevity, quality and authenticity. The car was taken back to bare metal with all panels removed, the chassis refurbished and treated with Dinotrol rust protection, and the body carefully rebuilt and refinished. The result is a Range Rover that feels tight, solid and properly resolved, not over-restored, but exactly as an original should.
Mechanically, extensive work has been undertaken to ensure reliability and ease of ownership. The power steering has been overhauled, the exhaust system replaced with stainless steel, and major components renewed including the timing chain and gears, alternator, distributor, ignition system, water pump, cooling fans and thermostat. New Wipac headlamps have been fitted, and the car now sits on refurbished Rostyle wheels with Pirelli Scorpion tyres, supported by subtly lowered road springs for a more planted, road-focused stance.
Inside, the cabin has been fully reconditioned, combining originality with freshness. The pleated herringbone-pattern brushed cloth and Perlino vinyl seats have been rebuilt with reconditioned frames, new foams and new covers. The interior trim panels and headlining have been replaced, and new wool carpets fitted throughout, including the cargo area, finished with nutmeg carpeting and dark brown contrast piping. It is a wonderfully inviting interior that feels true to the era while offering the comfort expected of a properly restored classic.
Details such as the later four-spoke steering wheel, refurbished bumpers and door frames, and the overall quality of presentation reflect a restoration that has been done for enjoyment, not simply for appearance.
With just 24, 200 miles showing, UK supply, and a comprehensive, well-judged restoration, this is an opportunity to acquire an early two-door Range Rover that can be used, enjoyed and admired in equal measure.
A rare and increasingly collectable British icon, finished beautifully, mechanically sorted, and ready to be driven.
