Aero Merlin MG3 Moto Guzzi powered three wheeler in superb condition throughout.
Of all the evocations of Morgan’s immortal pre war three wheeler, Arthur Rayner’s Aero Merlin is possibly the finest, being very well engineered and ergonomically well thought out making it enormous fun to drive.
This particular Aero Merlin is a little bit different as it was purchased as a chassis kit only because the builder had his own ideas as to how the body should look and the result is indeed excellent, being subtly different from the factory offering and perhaps more faithful to a late 1920s Morgan Aero.
The engine and transmission came from a 1997 Moto Guzzi which had covered 32, 000 miles when it was dismantled to provide power for the Aero project. The car was completed in October 2022 and has covered a mere 815 miles since so it is effectively as new.
Reverse gear is provided via an additional reversing gearbox supplied by Nova Racing.
Fully adjustable dampers are fitted from Protech Shocks.
The front brake calipers are by HiSpec Brakes.
Suitably narrow 4. 00x19 tyres are fitted to the front wheels giving a correct appearance and superbly light steering with lots of feel. Too often I’ve seen wider wheels on this type of vehicle which upsets the balance completely.
The yellow paintwork is to a very high standard indeed and there is a receipt on file for more than £5, 000 for the painting of the car.
The car is very comfortable to sit in and easily accommodates my 6 foot plus frame with all controls coming easily to hand.
Under the front cowling there is an adjustable pedal box plus brake master cylinder and electrical components while the rear cowling houses the fuel pump, filter and regulator.
Weather protection is minimal, consisting of a tonneau cover which is attached with elasticated hooks.
The file accompanying the car comprises V5C, SVA Test Certificate, MoT’s, invoices, Moto Guzzi manuals and the builder’s comprehensive notes on starting and operating the car.
Various other items come with the car including a wheel nut spanner, battery charger and fuelling equipment.
This is a very nicely constructed car combining the excellence of the Aero Merlin chassis, torquey Moto Guzzi V Twin motor and unique bodywork.
Our road test showed the Aero to be a very quick machine with fine handling and balance while the Moto Guzzi V Twin sounds wonderful.
These splendid vehicles rarely come on the market.
