With the 851 Transformation Cabriolet, Horch created a counterpart to the large Maybach Cabriolets of the 1930s.
The target audience was heads of state, CEOs, and high-ranking military officers. Global demand was estimated at approximately 30 vehicles per year. Only 6 were actually built, of which 3 are believed to still exist today.
The three-position convertible was designed and built by the coachbuilder Gläser in Dresden.
One of the six vehicles was delivered to the last emperor of Ethiopia: Haile Selassie.
Our vehicle is likely the prototype of the model series. It was first registered on April 21, 1936, to Auto Union AG, Horch plant, in Zwickau.
After just under a year, the company car was sold to Hamburg, to one of the city's most expensive addresses on Elbchaussee (then still Flottbeker Chaussee).
The car remained in Hamburg for many years afterward and even survived the war unscathed. The original vehicle registration document was not invalidated until the 1960s.

Between 1968 and 1972, the large Horch was completely restored with the utmost care, including the renewal of the wooden frame and the overhaul of the 8-cylinder engine.
The last owner acquired the Horch in 1985 and added it to his collection.
