Background:Launched in 1998, Yamaha’s original YZF-R1 redefined the litre-class sportsbike market with its radical compact design, light weight and aggressive performance. The 5PW model, introduced in 2002, marked a significant update with fuel injection, sharper styling, revised frame geometry and internal engine changes that increased both performance and tractability. It retained the distinctive character of the early R1 while benefiting from a more refined and responsive ride.
A favourite among riders for its usability and power-to-weight balance, the 5PW continued Yamaha’s tradition of delivering engaging and capable superbikes suitable for both road and track.
The Bike:First registered in 2002, this Yamaha YZF-R1 5PW shows 56, 000 miles and is offered without reserve. It presents as a useable example in overall fair condition, though it is now showing signs of age. Areas of corrosion and various cosmetic imperfections are noted, including dents to some panels.
The most recent MOT expired in 2023 and the bike is being sold without a current MOT. It is understood that the front brake discs will require replacement for the MOT as a minimum. Both tyres are described as being in reasonable condition.
Mechanically, the bike remains standard and retains its factory identity as one of Yamaha’s definitive sports machines from the early 2000s. While not a showpiece, it offers a solid foundation for regular use, refurbishment or light restoration.
