Born as a legend in 1947, the ‘Rossa’ could slow the soaring pace of Tazio Nuvolari’s Cisitalia and won five stages of the first post-war Mille Miglia. The Fiat 1100 S Berlinetta was the symbol of the Italian automotive industry, which was on the cusp of a revival. The Mille Miglia of 1947 was not only the first of the post-war era – it was entirely defined by the 1100 (millecento). Behind the dominant overall winner Alfa Romeo 8C, from second to eighth place were three Cisitalias and four Fiat 1100 Ss. They were light, robust, nimble, and born out of a sense of urgency.
Our Fiat 1100 S is already the model modified for the subsequent Mille Miglia races, in which it participated in 1950 and 2008. Besides the extensive technical changes led by the legendary engineer Dante Giacosa and his team, the Berlinetta for the first time received an aluminium body. Fiat Carrozzerie Speciali was the buzzword. Today this Fiat 1100 S is extremely rare – only twenty aluminium-bodied examples were built – each differing in detail.
This exemplar underwent an extensive road test in 1997 in the Italian publication Ruoteclassiche. There is also a dossier on this car in Ruoteclassiche. The Fiat was first registered on 5 November 1948 and until 1961 changed hands about 10 times. Subsequently its trail disappeared into the hall of a Turin coachbuilder. Re-discovered under a couple of centimetres of dust, the new owner could hardly believe his eyes. He found a complete, original and unrestored Fiat 1100S.
To date no restoration work has been carried out – neither on the body, the mechanics nor the interior. Of course, routine maintenance has been performed. In 2025 it received a full service.
The “Rossa” has a FIVA Pass with confirmation of two Mille Miglia entries, a Mille Miglia participant list from 2008, and an ASI certificate.
This unique example is absolutely original and ready to start the next Mille Miglia. Naturally the vehicle has matching numbers and colours.
