Description
HGY 83K is a stunning example of the highly desirable Porsche 914. This UK example left the Karmann factory in Osnabruck in Northwest Germany in February 1972 and was first registered on the 15th of May 1972 as HGY 83K in the UK. The original Porsche import ledger confirms the Porsche was supplied in the UK by Motortune in London. It is clear to see the car has been subject to a first-class, older restoration as it presents beautifully in its original colour combination with Signal Orange paintwork and Black cord trim.
The design of the Porsche 914 is exceptional in many regards, collaborating with VW and turning a brief of a lightweight sports car into a masterpiece. The first thing to note about a 914 is the vast amount of luggage space available, made possible by its Mid-engine layout. The distinctive wedge shape is accentuated by its wide and low-slung stance providing a low centre of gravity perfect for navigating tight corners. For open top motoring the Targa top is super lightweight and only requires one person to remove it stowing away in the boot.
On opening the breathable mesh panel above the engine compartment, you are greeted with an air-cooled flat-four boxer 1679cc engine fueled by Bosch D-Jetronic injection. HGY 83K is impressive throughout the rev range putting the power through a 5-speed dog-leg gearbox creating a seriously involved drive. With the short space from the engine to the tailpipes the air-cooled engine produces a tune that instantly turns heads and pricks the ears up of any petrol-head. While straight-line performance could be considered modest by modern standards, the near perfect 40/ 60 weight distribution is where this Porsche shines.
